Shuttle Rear Air Con?

Look at my first van and I've got my eye on 2. One has 3-zone climatic control which I'm sure means it will allow the rear passengers to set the AC to their own temp setting as well as the driver/passenger.

The other van (2017 Shuttle SE) has the controls shown below. I've read conflicting info on this, some say the AC is only for the driver/passenger and the rear passengers can only have cool-warm (no AC) and the other view I've read is that rear passengers will have AC but it will be at the same temp as the driver/passenger sets (this will be fine).

Can anybody confirm?

The brochure reads 08. Climatic air conditioning for cab and heater for rear passenger area. My reading of that is that there's is no independent AC to the rear vents with climatic.

3 zone climatronic certainly has it's own A/C evaporator in the heater box at the back right of the van.

It's a shame you cant see under the van in this area for all the plastic covers that are in place. Climatronic has 4 pipes going to the box. Hot water supply and return. And A/C refrigerant supply and return. Without A/C in the rear, there will only be the water supply and return.

Thats what I feared. I've downloaded brochures from 2016 to present and there have been subtle changes (as I've seen discussed on this forum!) so I wasn't 100% sure.

Makes more sense now you've explained the technical side, thank you. I'm hoping to see the van soon so will get to try just to make sure.

I've seen another couple that have 3 zone AC but don't have other options which would cost £££ to retro fit.

Stupid question, in a Shuttle (I assume a greenhouse on wheels) will it get unbearable hot in the rear in summer and is the front cab AC powerful enough to blast into the rear to help cool? It will have privacy glass and the side blinds but not sure how much difference that makes!

Having never had the chance to experience cab only A/C, I cant really offer an opinion on its capabilities in high summer temps. Maybe consider how many folk will travel in the back. (Do you like those people?):p

Although my 9 seat bus is now a camper. But can still have 6 folk on board with 3 rows of 2 seats extending to the back of the van. So really A/C in the back was a must for me. Was fortunate to find an SE spec Shuttle with 3 zone climatronic and a DSG box. It's a nice luxury to have and probably far easier and cheaper to retro fit other things.

Extras missing from SE that I wanted were cruise control (now retrofitted), fog lights (about to be retro fitted) and a MFSW (on the shopping list).

Thanks again, I'm not 100% sure the kids (which I like 51% of the time) would put up with being super hot in the back on a long journey.

All the cars we've had have either not had AC or only in the front. Even the biggest car I had (Mondeo estate) doesn't come close to a SWB T6 but they were fine then.

I have seen a few vans with the 3-zone climate but the van with just the standard AC also comes with front & rear parking sensors, parking camera, heated seats, upgraded stereo with sat-nav and cruise. The cost of retro fitting or the inconvenience of not having these is what's making me question myself.

At least I'll have AC as the driver. And the kids will grow up and leave. Hopefully.

I can vouch for the efficiency of the 3 zone climatic. I spent last summer in hot and humid southern Italy and the A/C had no problem cooling my Caravelle down in very quick time.

Not what you're asking but it might help you out as you say you want Nav. I did too but went without in the end after using it in my lovely wife's Tiguan. It's good for high speed, motorway type navigation but I find it nowhere near as good as a dedicated Sat Nav or even Google Maps through the App connect for navigating through towns or countryside.

Cheers Lukavell. Out of all the extras sat nav is probably last then heated seats.

I'd like cruise due to the amount we drive on motorways going away and parking sensors/camera would be nice. I'd happily use my TomTom or phone or look to upgrade the headunit. I was really querying to see if I needed it versus the expense of retro fitting this kit.

I've been looking at retro fit options for a while and cruise seems reasonably priced but getting parking sensors and/or camera can be costly.

Once I'd had cruise I couldn't live without it. It makes long journeys much more relaxing.

Apologies for harping on but the wife's Tiguan has adaptive CC and that is outstanding. I'm still hoping that someone brighter than me will figure out a way of reprogramming normal CC to be adaptive.

I agree with the sensors and camera, very useful.

I've always picked cruise and find it makes long drives (only stopping to fill up when going skiing) much easier. When I had my first auto, that with cruise was almost like not having to drive and now I wouldn't go back to a manual.

Don't mind not getting it on purchase but will add asap. Maybe I will have to get the van with the better AC unit and retrofit other bits as and when.

It's shocking that the SE spec doesn't have parking sensors or camera as standard. Especially on a LWB passenger carrier. However if your ok with a seperate screen for reversing, then 40 quid will see you with a reversing camera.

Yeah, I did have a look at the separate reverse cameras so might go down that route.

Wireless or does that suffer interference? Or is it an easy cable run?

This thread is wondering.... I think I need to get one on my drive and start my own money pit.

As there was quite a bit of bluetooth activity already in my van, along with 12v usb adaptors, I played safe and hard wired it in. It's an easy cable run though. Although I eventually put my camera in the rear spoiler. Being able to see the rear bumper gives perspective of distance from the back of the van to an obstruction behind. But it could go above the number plate or under the back bumper. I took the power feed from the nearside reverse light. it's easier here, as the compartment where the jack is kept allows you into the wiring loom. The offside would be much trickier as your heater box restricts access.

Sorry, pics aren't great as they're cropped from bigger images but they show the camera above the centre brake light and screen above the right hand air vent.

Nice. I can see the benefit of the high level camera when you have something like a bike rack which would block the lower reg plate camera.

Also, I don’t mind the extra screen you probably don’t notice it in the cab.

I'm going to be installing a Reimo pop top in my LWB T6 which has the rear air-conditioning and heating outlets in the ceiling above the two rows of seats. You mentioned you converted yours into a camper. Did you install a pop top?

What kind of bike rack are you using? How is attached to the vehicle? Please let me know. Thanks

My T5 Caravelle had AC for the rear but my T6 shuttle has warm air only.
The T5 had a rad in the back aswell as AC rad.
The T6 is simply cool air or warm air from the rad.
My shuttle is SE.

Look, dont worry too much. The T5's were plagued with the AC never working in the back anyway so think yourself lucky your not consistantly have to recharge it. The pipe runs were so long and there was too many extra joins over that long run, it was almost going to be impossible for them not to leak.

What gets me more is my Shuttle SE has no opening rear windows. It must be boiling in the summer!

Hmmm, I’ve just bought a LWB Shuttle SE with no opening rear windows. I’m getting a bit worried now, the kids will be fighting to sit on the double seat up front. Having all that space in the back was meant to avoid them fighting to sit in the front!!

Im only saying that buddy because I have also removed my rear fan as I've had a pop top fitted so my kids will be sweating. If youve got the fans still in the back you should be ok.
