Random ratchet crimper problem

Has anybody had problems using their HS-16 crimpers? I’ve only used mine twice before and now the ratchet has failed. After a lot of fiddling and shaking they finally opened up but now it’s happened again. After a lot more fiddling I got the crimped lug out. Closed the tool again and put it down. A couple couple of seconds later it sprung open like a mouse trap on its own scattering everything off the bench. It’s testing my sense of humour o_O

i have 3 pairs of these, not had any issues with them over the last few years..

the ratchet mechanism is designed to lock as you are crimping down. (so you can release your grip and reapply pressure)

to unlock the ratchet before you hit dead bottom you need to squeeze hard then twist the knob. (yellow)

"You have to squeeze the handles same time as twisting the small hard to get at knob to release."

the other option is to just remove the ratchet section . . .

just drill the rivets and remove that middle part?

They tend to have lots of tiny circlips holding the various pins / pivots. I wonder if one has gone AWOL causing it to fall apart?

Yes. Thought about that but wont let a little hand tool beat me....yet. We'll see how I feel by the end of today. Stand Clear :grin bounce:

The purpose of the ratchet is to ensure a full and correct crimp is made.
An incorrect crimp can have serious safety implications depending on the application.
