Oil temp overheating - coolant level warning

Is the engine actually hot?

Water level fine, but is the engine actually hot?

Sensor damage?

Tried turning on the heater on hot in the cab to bleed off heat?

I’d stay sat where you took the photo and let Recovery set up.

I must admit, I would find it difficult to hold my horses before commencing the investigation and troubleshooting.

Well... The RAC chap opened the coolant and turned the engine on, no circlulation of the coolant. He suggested a water pump issue and towed me home.

Now the water pump and timing belt was done on 17th July 2024 by the previous owner (I've got the garage invoice). So am I unlucky or has that garage done something odd to cause this...

Either way, seems I'm looking at getting the water pump changed and now I'm thinking, should I also get the timing belt done as well just so I know it was actually changed correctly and have a new warranty and reassurance :cautious:

Dammit, spelt coolant wrong in the title. I can't see a way to correct that either :|

I drove a little and turned the heater and such on but made no difference, only stopping in the hard sholder brought the temp down. Under load it went straight up after 10 seconds or so.

Very frustrating, unexpected pound signs nearly three months before Christmas is never good. But I’d definitely bite the bullet and go for the belt as well. Just for peace of mind. Good luck 🤞

Thermostat stuck closed?

Water pump impeller breaking off is very unusual.

Are we assuming that it was a genuine water pump that was installed?

I have no idea if it was genuine, it was an independant garage that did it.

When I started it up there was some rattling from the engine that sounded bad. A bit like a belt or something spinning off balance. When I drove up the street it went away. I've looked in the engine bay but nothing stood out, however I don't know much about engines.

Any simple things I can check? Tomorrow I'll let the engine run and see if the heaters work and the pipes are getting hot.

Well, it ended up being the cambelt that was replaced 13 months ago (by the previous owner) was suspected to be overtightened. All the pulley's were seized, the baring had fallen out of the one pulley and that was the ticking noise I could hear. There's teeth missing on the cambelt, water pump sezied and the steel on all pulley's had gone blue from the heat. I was told I was very lucky to have not had an engine replacement.

Very happy with the garage who fixed it up and took photos and showed me all the damage. Shout out to Welsh Volkswagen Specialists in Penarth, Wales if anyone needs a decent garage.

Might be an idea to say who did the previous belt to save anyone losing an engine in the future.

Fair. It was Holme Valley MOT in Huddersfield. I was thinking about reaching out to them but I don't have the spare time to tell companies they should train their staff/check their work.
Maybe there’s been other similar cases, not suggesting there’s any chance of compensation but they just might take some action to improve the situation.
