NOx sensor and Adblue faults codes

Hopefully mine is more helpful :D

Yeah, it is to me.
Mine's also a 102. I set off at the weekend from Devon around 10am where it had got down to a couple below freezing. About 60 miles into the journey (now around +5c) my engine warning light came on. This is the 3rd time it's happened in 12 months. On 2 occasions low temps were prevalent. The 3rd was in the summer.

On the 1st occasion the van was up in Hull and I needed to get it back to a garage nearer my home down south. I called the AA and they said it was an ad-blue fault and cleared the codes. When I took it to the VW garage they said they couldn't do anything because the codes had been cleared. They reckoned they had had to put 10 litres of ad-blue in the van despite me putting 10 litres in two month's previously and had only done several hundred miles since.
The second occasion (same fault) they did a software change. All seemed good until the weekend when the light came on again.
The garage can't take the van for another couple of weeks so I don't know what the outcome will be. I may just call VW Assist and get them out. They can then contact the garage and get me a queue jump.
I really don't need this happening every 3 or 4 months, especially as it's out of warranty in September.

Van has been back to VW 4 times in 3 weeks with engine and AdBlue warning lamp issues. After replacing sensor and injector they completing a complete test and rest, they are now looking to replace the catalytic converter. Problem is there are none available. Guess this is more wide spread issue than they would like admit.

I'm starting a new thread to make it easier to search this issue.

I recently experienced the following problems with my van. It's a Euro 6 102bhp 2017 model.
Basically my mpg started to decrease significantly and my adblue consumption started to go through the roof, for no good reason. Eventually the engine management light came on and I did a scan with VCDS.

How has your van been after the NOX replacement? I've just had a multitude of faults come up and one being this.... also an intermittent issue on the EGR .. as you said MPG has been going down, van is running rich and no other issues other than a drained battery one day and down 15bhp on power .

So a few issues that could all relate. Ha ha

2017 102 model, recent engine light came on, 2 error codes came up using obdeleven. Second times its happened during this weather (-2/-3) neebr happened in the warmer months since owning the van. Haven't topped up adblue for a few weeks still on 3500 range.

Is it just the cold weather causing the issue? Or is the NOx sensor needing to be replaced?

Please post full scan of engine section. Also 12 first digits of the VIN.

@Jfoz i have had the same 31103 fault code on my van. The diagnosis was to change the NOx sensor, which, as my van was out of warranty, I paid for £680. The light came back on.
Before you go spending money on anew NOx sensor, make sure they check to se if your van has had the latest VW adblue update carried out.

My 2019 102 PV just been in for an orange EML on dash. Despite the service manager previously saying a 2019 would have had the latest Adblue software update, it hadn't. So, its had the update today along with 8 free adblue top ups voucher.
For info my truck had a build date of Jan 2019, first registered in April 2019.

I've just been told my VWCV Twitter support that there is no outstanding Adblue update for my 2017 transporter 102

I will post a full scan of engine section when the engine light comes back on as I just cleared it last time! Or does it not need to be on?

No need to have light on - just curious what software + it's version is in there.
That information is in the "scan" - when you plug in - "Connect" and "Scan" - then. e.g. email the result to yourself. Just copy the section here.

I'd like to disagree with the Twitter support.

The engine software yours (below) is the original one from factory.
---------------------------------------------------------------
01 Engine
System description: R4 2.0l TDI
Software number: 04L906056KA
Software version: 4047
Hardware number: 04L907445
Hardware version: H02
---------------------------------------------------------------
The current engine software is the following:

01 Engine
System description: R4 2.0l TDI
Software number: 04L906056KA
Software version: 6163
Hardware number: 04L907445
Hardware version: H02
---------------------------------------------------------------
However, for N1 class (basically VIN WV1....) the update has not been classified as mandatory (as it was for passenger carriers) but should be done if faults (especially) P204F, P20EE show up.

How would I go about getting this updated? Does it have to be a VW garage/service centre?

I did check with vwcs re if the where any outstanding updates for my van, which was a 2017 150bhp. They also told me that there where none.
When the garage I use checked, they said it had the old update on it, so put the new one on.
I absolutely love the vans, but have very little faith in the customer service side of things

@Jfoz, most garages can carry out the update as far as I am aware, they may charge you though.
I wouldn't hold out much hope of VW doing it for nothing, although morally they should.
I had had my van re mapped which did muddy the waters with my van.

I had to pay £80 to get mine (2017 150bhp) updated as they said there was no recall outstanding despite being an old version of the software and the EML on. No free ad-blue either. I was warned that the ad-blue consumption would increase after the update, but wasn’t expecting to be using nearly double. A full tank used to last 5500 miles now struggles to do 3500 miles. But on the plus side no engine lights and it seems to run better!

Let's check that again in summer? My impression is that the AdBlue consumption (with the update) was not much different in summer but guzzling now in subfreezing temperatures.

EDIT:
Statistics one year later:

Looks like I'll have to pay £80 also to have it updated. Will need to wait for the engine light to come back on (if it even does) to booked it in to VW centre. Im still under warranty with RAC, maybe that would cover it
