NOx sensor and Adblue faults codes

Hi @mmi

Well, thank you for the steep, but guided learning curve!

I haven’t yet though managed to find the ‘Live’ readings including speed at fault as on your fault log printout.
Luckily my joyride included around a town bypass, to the roundabout at the end and back the same route.
So, I plotted the route on Google maps and, at the point of fault, I would have been travelling at around 95km, accelerating up a slight incline.
Hope this helps.

That is the only trip I’ve made in the Bus since returning from Yorkshire.

The last regen is listed as 151 minutes and 183km old, with diesel consumption of 13.36 litres.
This would have been returning home on the M5 motorway @ 70mph.

I will carry on playing with OBDeleven to hopefully learn more.

It’s been fun!
Andy

Hi guys,

I hope all is well.

I have had the error below four times with the corresponding MIL light. T6 Multivan 2016 DSG 150hp mapped to 180hp

Last time was yesterday, after replacing the NOx sensor (which i thought it solved the issue because i have done more than 1500 kms with the new sensor). Also, the van has (after the second light) gone through after a descarbonization proccess which is supposed to clean EGR, turbo, DPF etc.
EGR flexi pipes (front and rear) aren’t leaking, i have made sure, i have the "newer" version which is not supposed tu crack.

The van has not done a DPF regeneration quite recently as the 95% of the time i drive is highways around 2200-2400rpm long journeys

Error and full autoscan attached below. The autoscan was taken after clear the code (i know you were going to ask for it :D)

i have been reading similar posts in the forun buy havent been able to find a case similar than mine since the error seems a slightly different

Also, i think i have the most updated software engine, haven`t i?
04L 906 056 KH H02 6184 = the current

The three parameter have come to my atention are these

NOx sensor before SCR cat conv: offset correction factor: 0 ppm
NOx sensor after SCR cat conv: offset correction factor: 341 ppm
Reducing agent quality sensor: urea concentration: 305.92 %

what are your thoughts, what could be the next steps to check? Is there a particulates sensor? another NOx sensor? Catalytic/DPF issue?

Thanks in advanced
Cheers
Miguel

what are your thoughts, what could be the next steps to check/replace ?

Please post engine's complete blockmap data so we can get an inside view what the engine thinks about itself.
Preferably warm engine idling (e.g. after a 15+ minute drive).

If you are interested I'll prepare a measurement setup for VCDS to be used when you drive around - to monitor various NOx related engine parameters.
Let us know what you think!

Wow @mmi , you are everywhere, like a god :D . Thanks for you response.

I will do the short drive in an hour, warm the engine and do what you have requested.

for sure, it will be wonderful and very useul. Could i use to when doing that coming drive to take the 01 module block map?

Thanks
Miguel

Of course :waving:

Attached a VCDS preset file NOx.u01 (remove .txt extension so it will be .u01 -file)

It should record the following:
IDE00021 Engine RPM
IDE00075 Vehicle speed
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value
IDE00434 Particle filter: soot mass calculated
IDE04090 Exhaust temperature bank 1
IDE04272 Counter for regeneration time of particulate filter
IDE07738 Charge air cooler inlet: pressure sensor 1 bank 1: raw value
IDE07744 Particle filter: air pressure sensor 1 bank 1: raw value
IDE07757 Exhaust recirc.valve 1 bank 1: posit.feedback - Actual value
IDE09017 NOx sens.dwnstrm.SCR cat conv: NOx conc.
IDE10817 Lambda value at inlet of particulate filter
IDE11219 Reducing agent inj. quantity: spec. value

Either use the file NOx.u01 - load the measurement preset file from the selection (red circle) below (Or tick all the above parameters manually)

1640855226403.png

Below at step 3 after loading the preset file you still need to - Tick "Group UDS requests" - by 7

VCDS Data logging

  1. Ignition ON
  2. Read engine faults codes: VCDS > Select > Engine > Fault Codes > Save Codes > Clear Codes > Save Codes
  3. Start data logging (Adv. Meas.Values etc.) with the preset file - please do not forget to tick the "Group UDS Requests by 7" (greatly enhances sampling rate)
  4. Start the engine
  5. Do your driving
  6. When finished your journey - let engine idle 1-2 minutes (do not touch throttle or even steering wheel)
  7. Stop the logging
  8. Read engine faults codes: VCDS > Select > Engine > Fault Codes > Save Codes > Clear Codes > Save Codes
The logfile will be in folder C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs

I will do it this afternoon and will share the results combining a short trip in motorways and in some conventional roads.

Hi mmi,

Here you have the logs following the instructions. i did not expect the MIL light to come up during this log-driving as it took more than 1500 kms to came back since last time. Hopefully this log could give us some clue about what is going on with this disgusting error.

i have put the .csv through a loggin tool, it case it may be useful

Thank you very much. Excellent.

We didn't yet catch what I'm expecting to happen. But already some intriguing data in there. I'll try to find a few minutes time to prepare notes what's fascinates me in there :geek:

And, you are right - to make the fault surface the conditions has to unfavourable some time.

I would appreciate if you could keep on logging next 200 kms - I would like to capture a full DPF regeneration - it's the most NOx rich period and a candidate to trigger the fault. However, no spesific driving is needed - just need to catch all rides longer than 10 minutes.

Anyways, do the logging but DO NOT CLEAR THE FAULTS anymore so let the engine accumulate NOx overshoots. Just check the faults - it will manifest itself in the fault memory well before turning on MIL light.

Please post the logs as soon as you have collected those.

My favourite - NOx emissions ;)

Here is an appetizer... passive DPF regeneration actually taking soot level down - @huw169 ;)

Guess what happens to NOx levels @Miguelpfdez94 when engine exhaust is almost 800 C

Yes, i am going to do some drives this week (i dont usually take the van in business days as i work mainly from home) of more than 30 min to see if the error come out.

i wont clear the faults.. it is true i have seen this error quite frequently in the memory but until a month ago didn`t turn on the MIL light. That is what really worries me, what could have changed within a month.

Amazing analysis mmi. So, if i have understood correctly, the nox levels go extremly up when a regeneration is on going due to the exhaust reaching the target temperature... doesn`t it?

Does it matter if it a passive regeneration (like this a think), an active (engine at 1000rpm) or a planned one (with VCDS for e.g)?

But... following this logic, every time a regeneration is being done, there would be a risk to get this error as the NOx will be way up, right?

Thanks
Miguel

Thank you very much. That's indeed interesting. Is your van's clock in the dash panel in correct time (or actually same time as your computer)? Just trying to syncronize the log and the fault time/Instrument. Actually based on engine rpm and speed - the times seem to match.

Interestingly the AdBlue injection paused for 60 seconds before fault code time stamp - even though NOx sensor reports high values - very strange :speechless:

Anyways, the next DPF regeneration will start approx. in 40-60 km. Let's see what happens in there! Do not clear faults - just keep eye on "Fault frequency" counter in fault log (now 1).

PS. Have you checked if the function "Group UDS requests by 7" works for you. It greatly enhances sampling rate by reading data in blocks (of 7).

Yes, the panel clock has the correct time

Interesting, it is supposed tobe active all the time the engine is running or just when the car detects a lot of toxic gases, does it turn on? Maybe... could it be dirty or with ad blue cristalized preventing ad blue to be injested efficiently? i have seen a couple of cases around internet.

Anyways, the next DPF regeneration will start approx. in 40-60 km. Let's see what happens in there! Do not clear faults - just keep eye on "Fault frequency" counter in fault log (now 1).

Sure, i will do a couple of rides on saturdarday, of 50-60 kms, i wont clear the fault and let you know

PS. Have you checked if the function "Group UDS requests by 7" works for you. It greatly enhances sampling rate by reading data in blocks (of 7).
i will check it and enable it in the nex run

my understanding is something is wrong in the exhaust system in the car, doesn it? i guess it is not normal this error to come up despite doesn`t turn on the MIL light

thanks
Miguel

Based on my other measurements this far - the injection is on more or less full time. Certainly it pauses during engine braking (=no fuel injected -> no emissions).

The recorded parameter has designation "Reducing agent inj. quantity: spec. value" which suggests it is "commanded" value, thus doesn't necessarily indicate actual value - there is no sensor to record actual AdBlue flow.

Thank you very for doing and sharing the measurements!

Well, a kind of normal - I have logged quite a few (some 30+ incidents) P20EE faults without ever seeing MIL light. My feeling is that the "timeout" is somewhere in range 300-500 km - if the active fault doesn't reoccur in that range it seems to start over accumulating some internal counter. However, each overshoot seems to increment the "Frequency" in fault code.

Re your questions a couple of days ago - they are not forgotten - just gathering data to back up my "statements"

ased on my other measurements this far - the injection is on more or less full time.

Thank you very for doing and sharing the measurements!

that makes 100% sense, so, with that paremeter, we have some kind of idea what is going on with the ad blue injectot but not a fact, understood. It is a pitty that sensor does not exist to provide an accurate measurement.

No need to thank me, just trying to be helpful sharing my data/experience and at the same time trying to solve my issue, which most likely will help solve many other in the forum

Yes, that is my understanding too. i have had some months ago an injection problem (coil light --> low rail pressure --> faulty injectors) and the frequency in that case indicated the number of error with same code occured, after a certain number of them, MIL light appears so.. i guess it is the same logic with this error as you say

i have already realized you dont miss anything :D really appreciated your help (here and with the bloody paking heater ;) )

Thanks

Food for thought...

For comparison a recording from a T6 (150kW/204PS) without the software update - thus prone to P20EE fault. The recording was a long one - 2h18mins.

The load conditions seem to be reasonably similar to yours, see average speeds.

Based on these two recordings (just averaging over full span) first impressions:
  • On yours NOx level is 5 times higher (258 vs. 47 ppm) even though it's injecting AdBlue twice as much (58.9 vs. 30.6 mg/s)
  • Average EGR valve position (25% vs. 39%) indicates significantly lower exhaust recirculation (NOx!)
  • Also the lambda value indicates oxygen rich exhaust gases (EGR!) (3.8 vs. 2.7)

Anyways, looking forward to the next data batch!

Hi mmi,

here you have another couple of logs, around 40/45 min ride

Sorry, i forgot to add the UDS block in the first one. I did it in the second (LOG-01-IDE00021_&115)

AS you said, in the first ride, the van did a regeneration(LOG-01-IDE00021_&113), i let it finish, i guess you will see it the logs and it will be interestings.

For the moment, the ECU sticks with the same error as before, no new error of any kind.

Hi mmi

Thanks for such detailed analysis

For comparison a recording from a T6 (150kW/204PS) without the software update - thus prone to P20EE fault. The recording was a long one - 2h18mins.
So... with that context, that data is from a van where this system was not optimised yet (old software)

On yours NOx level is 5 times higher (258 vs. 47 ppm) even though it's injecting AdBlue twice as much (58.9 vs. 30.6 mg/s)
This really bothers me, that means adblue system is trying to compensate this high amount of NOx particulates and the fault comes up when adblue is in the limit and can not compensate enough... is this assumption correct?

Average EGR valve position (25% vs. 39%) indicates significantly lower exhaust recirculation (NOx!)
This may be the reason why the sensor detect such amount of nox... if the is not opened enough ( due to too much dirty?) there isnt enough recirculation and NOx needs work harder to compensate even though some times goes beyond the limit.

That makes sense mmi?

Also the lambda value indicates oxygen rich exhaust gases (EGR!) (3.8 vs. 2.7)

I dont really know how to interpret this value... id there is too much oxygen in the exhaust gases.. does it mean the combustion is not efficient? By this statement, do you think the EGR may be faulty?

Thanks
Miguel

replacing the NOx sensor (which i thought it solved the issue because i have done more than 1500 kms with the new sensor)
A question if you don't mind - what was done on engine approx. 5000 km ago?

Also, i think i have the most updated software engine, haven`t i?
04L 906 056 KH H02 6184 = the current
Yes, that's current software and the data recording provided verify the updated AdBlue injection scheme is in there... - at least partially.
However,
150hp mapped to 180hp
means that the inside of the software is something else than VW OEM software 04L 906 056 KH - 6184

The three parameter have come to my atention are these

NOx sensor before SCR cat conv: offset correction factor: 0 ppm
NOx sensor after SCR cat conv: offset correction factor: 341 ppm
Reducing agent quality sensor: urea concentration: 305.92 %
I don't know how to take advantage of those.
NOx sensor before SCR cat conv: offset correction factor: 0 ppm - always 0 ppm, because early T6 engines do not have NOx sensor before cat.conv.
NOx sensor after SCR cat conv: offset correction factor: 341 ppm - is a live parameter - found in my logs values 0...1180 ppm.
Reducing agent quality sensor: urea concentration: 305.92 % - is a live parameter on some T6 engines, a few observations here:
Non-zero concentration
Always 0.0% concentration

Is there a particulates sensor? another NOx sensor?
Yes, a particulate sensor exists. Just one NOx sensor - till 2019.

Catalytic/DPF issue?
At first glance into the data nothing wrong with them.

That concludes the first part - I'll get back on your recent post in a minute...
