Newbie Insurance Question

Hi.
I’m currently in the market for a camper and currently looking at T6 conversions and stock californias. What’s the advice on approaching insurance? I’ve had costs in for a California from a few places and the price range is insane. Through the standard comparison websites I’d use for car insurance I was offered £60 a month with recovery etc from QuoteMeHappy (who already insure my golf) but JustKampers we’re coming in at £130 a month on the same details. Mustard were even higher. I would have assumed the details that QuoteMeHappy had from an application based on vehicle reg gave all the relevant information they need but am I missing something?

Insurance is a mine field..

All based around the:
Car/van
Reg plate.
Estimated value.
Your postcode.
Emissions.
Risk factor.
Cost of conversion.
Security devices fitted.
Location of overnight parking.
Your history.
Your job.
Your financial status.
ETC etc...

So just be 100% truthful, answer all there questions, try to phone around as many main companies as you can be bothered with....and go with the one you are happy with.

Most companies are just brokers now days and add there own margins on top of the base insurance, so you will find massive variations.

I use A-Plan (commercial) for the van and Aviva for the car.

In theory if you go to the main insurance company and miss out the middleman broker you should get a cheaper quote . . . . . Most online comparison websites have deals with the insurance companies so it's not a level playing field.... you need to do your own legwork and sniff out the best price.

So....Spoke to VW today. It seems that the California V5C is classed as a diesel MPV so insured as a car not a van. My understanding is that when looking at conversions you need to get the vehicle type changed from van to motorhome which needs specialist insurance.

The monthly difference between insuring as a car vs insuring as a motorhome is massive considering some of the quotes I've had for a conversion to the spec I'm after. Looks like the California covers pretty much all of it for not much more money and will cost considerably less per month.
