Insurance Companies

Ah work have finally told me they found me liable for two accidents at work, which I think will make my campervan quite jump. So I may buy the van and insure with admiral, just board and out an ovano in the van and do all the posh bits to reinsure as a camper further down the line. It also means I can do some of it myself if I have time to potter away at it

After reading suggestions on here, I have just saved a load moving to Howden (£385) from Adrian Flux (£589), and I had been with Adrian Flu 2 years prior.

Just spent a tedious afternoon ringing around for insurance quotations.

Currently with Comfort (highly recommended 👍), but my van no longer qualifies for their new-for-old benefit, which was the primary attraction for me.

Here are the scores on the doors:

Comfort (last year's premium:..... £650 w/ £300 xs
Comfort (renewal premium):....... £606 w/ £300 xs
Adrian Flux:......................................... £550 w/ £600 xs (+£18 for AV)
Safeguard:........................................... £715 w/ £300 xs
Scenic (2ndSafeguard brand):.... £620 w/ £600 xs
Caravan Guard(**):.......................... £452 w/ £350 xs

At this point I had almost lost the will to live and purchased from Caravan Guard - just need to find a suitable standalone AV policy now.

(**) Read on here that Caravan Guard don't insure campers without "on-board cooking facilities", but this doesn't apply if they recognise the company that built the conversion.

Have you not enquired with Howdens @Bav

Mine just from Adrian Flux came in £12 on last year at £531 +AV
I can never work out how they come to prices for insurance my insurance is for £38,000 but they state until AV is confirmed only market value will be paid out so why is the insurance premium not for the market value and the additional AV to make up the differance so if the market value of my van is 20K started life as a panel van why does the premium not reflect a 20k van
I am sure someone on here tried that move and could only get an AV for the sum insured ie 20k
Kind regards
confused of Dartford 😂 😂

When you say a standalone AV policy, does that work like gap insurance? If something happens how do they calculate the difference?

Cheers

Similar to GAP insurance, yes (though there are many different types of GAP).

You agree a value with the AV provider and, in the event of a total loss, they pay out any shortfall between that value and the settlement figure fron your primary insurer.

Ah ok nice. What evidence do they need for AV? Be interested to know who you end up with and cost as not many would give me AV on the new one

Very interested in your findings on this...

Never had a vehicle worth buying AV for before, so it'll be the first time through the process for me. I'm expecting them to require photos, invoices and maybe a list of factory/conversion options that justify a value above that of standard market value.

Have you had a look at Sterling? They were by far the easiest to deal with for me.

I didn’t end up going with them as my van is currently largely unconverted and they wouldn’t protect my no claims bonus. I’m hoping when I renew and my fleet insurance fault claims are two years old, and I’ll have a baby, they will.

Howdens said that the converted value of my vehicle parked on a road was too high (about £40k). I did argue that someone down my road parks a 23 plate California ocean on the road, but I guess they’re tied by what the underwriters tell them.

They were on my list, but never got round to calling them. I reckoned £452 for 5* Defaqto cover from Caravan Guard for a £60k van with only 3yrs NCD was about as good as it was going to get.

Jesus, I should give them a call.

Although they won’t cover a self conversion with no cooking facilities will they?

I believe not.

Read on here that they won't, so used on-line chat to ask them. I use a portable induction hob, so my van doesn't have a built-in hob, but they said that was fine because it was professionally converted and the convertor was on their list.

Yeah we plan to use a portable induction hob. But I was going to do the panels, and insulation myself, plus its an ovano in the back which I've sell installed with help from the person I bought it from.

Leisure electrics, diesel heater and ceiling is likely to be a professional install when I can get the insurance to say "yeah we'll cover the van with that value"....... I already know what companies I want to use for those. But I suspect caravan guard want an installer that you basically give the van to and they do it all.
