how refit thetford potti rubber

Hello. Just back from a first trip with a small thetford potti. Upon taking the outlet spout cap off to empty it, the rubber seal was in the cap, sort of skewed and loose.
Do I put this rubber over the outlet pipe thread to the end of the thread, so when the cap is tightened onto the thread there is a visible black ring? If not any guidence appreciated.

It's probably like that because it's been over tightened get a new rubber if that ones been over stretched the rubber fits in the cap
