Engine Management Light - P20EE/31103 What to Do??

Hi guys,I’ve had this issue ongoing now for about a year, exactly the same few hundred miles light on back in back out of vw light back on,it has a Pendle map,I had all the updates done last year before the map,it’s now at vw again booked in 5 weeks ago I got it back dec 14th light back on same code in 4 weeks(couple of hundred miles)they have just phoned and said they’ve run through protacol and now sent it of to head quarters, egr fine and cooler so...‍♂️My warranty ran out in November but as this is on going from warranty period should be covered,
What a ball ache...67 150bhp 23000 miles been happening since 16000k

I had all the updates done last year before the map
Hmmm... did you get the fault even when running pure OEM updated software = after the update but before it was mapped?

I'm very interested to see how you get on.

I dont think so but to be honest I can’t remember, would have to look at some receipts, had the van at 14000k light came on on first trip, that was the update feb 2020 got mapped in the summer 2020 and have had the light on 4 times In 9k,there’s a good thread well quite upsetting thread I should say with twoguns on here back in 2017,it’s strange how some vans have no problem at all and others are constant,so many different reviews on fuel drive them hard etc,I don’t think they have ever got to the bottom of it on twoguns, personally I think the exhaust system can’t handle what the engine puts through it..but will let you no the outcome

Are you close to wherever put the map on ?
Worth putting back to standard and run it like that for a bit ? Rules out map being a factor then put it back on .

Quick update, spoke to Paul the tech guy at Cardiff vw,he said the cooler is leaking and he reckons the manifold is full of carbonthey have sent it of to tech and I’m waiting for the results of what they are going to do,paul said new egr and manifold of and cleaned or new one,I no the the egr cooler on the 180 was really bad but didn’t expect that on my 150,that’s why I bought it,23k this is disappointing, will update more as it comes...

An update I had the pendle map taken off and the software updated on the van and 1500 mile later still no warning light so I’m hoping it’s now all okay.

I've had the update for a fortnight now, no issues. Seems to give more miles after an AdBlue fill-up, regens quicker and takes about 6g more soot before the regen kicks in. All this is giving me more miles to the tank too so happy days. Even better the pendle agent removed map, did upgrade and replaced map free of charge :D

I've had this problem since July 2020 and its still being investigated. Van is a 2017 T6 Kombi LWB 150BHP. It started under warranty thank goodness and the dealership have covered the work since with some haggling they have had to do with VW. The issue usually occurs after I've done a long motorway journey (>200 miles) where the engine has been fully loaded. Once its fully cooled down (overnight), it will usually come on shortly afterwards. There have been no other symptons. The dealership have been working with the UK Tech Centre and Germany as well but have yet to fix the issue. Below is a summary of whats happened so far:
  • Dealership conducted a full service to the vehicle 11th May 2020
  • EML light came on 6th July 2020 and contacted Dealership and VW immediately
  • Dealership investigated the issue between 14th to 17th July 2020 – action taken: decoked engine
  • Light came back on after long motorway journey 24th July 2020
  • Dealership investigated the issue between 1st September to 11th October 2020 – action taken: replaced DPF
  • Light came back on after local journey (1 hr) 21st October
  • Dealership investigated between 30th November 2020 to 15 February 2021 – action taken: EGR valve, SDR cap, associated gaskets and sensors
  • EML Light came back on 10th April 2021
  • Dealership investigated the issue between 20 April to 19 May 2021 – action taken: replaced air mass meter
  • EML Light came back on 24th May 2021 after long motorway journey
  • Dealership investigated between 4th to 25th June 2021 – replaced No.4 sensor on the DPF (the DPF that was replaced in October 2020)
  • EML Light came back on after long motorway journey 16th August 2021
  • Dealership investigated and the fault was referred back to Germany. A number of tests we undertaken but no faults found. Picked van back up on 1st October
  • 30 mile locally no problem. Did 300 mile motorway journey 8th Oct, van not used for a 36 hours and light came on immediately on 10th Oct on leaving.
  • Contacted Dealership and VW 11 Oct 2021
  • Went in 22 Nov for investigations. Waiting on VW Germany and needed courtesy van back so asked to swap vehicles which did so on the 29 Nov
  • Light came back on again on 12 Dec 2021 - Just to keep you updated – the EML came on yesterday. This time however I had not been on any long journeys – only local journeys and 3 or 4 journeys of 50-60 miles each. The light came on after only 20 minutes on the motorway, most of that at 50mph on the M27.
  • Booked in for 4 Jan but moved back to 13 Jan this time to remove the cylinder head
  • Experienced Ad Blue issue – on motorway back down south, Ad Blue warning light came on to say only 650 miles range left, 10 min later went back up to 2500 miles and alert went off. This was repeated again some 30 min later. Since then its remained on 2500 mile range.
  • 14 Jan 2022 – Dealership called to say they are checking Ad Blue issue which affects the NOx efficiency. The fault code has always been the NOx efficiency sensor P20. An Ad Blue issue could obviously affect this.

It's difficult for the forum to double guess the dealer without seeing the logged faults for ourselves.
You could buy yourself a carista and take a log of the codes every time you get the EML and then post them here for us to look at?

I had an almost identical saga. I ended up pointing out that the van did not seem to be of a reasonable standard and they bought it back off me for what I'd paid them. I now have another T6 150 DSG. And the EML has gone off twice. Arghh

Blimey - thought mine was a horror story. Mine is back with the dealership. They've removed the engine manifold and not found anything to worry about and now waiting on Germany to remote in. I could write a book about all this.

The saga continues but getting close to resolution. VW UK Technical Centre based in Milton Keynes have had the van since 4 May. They have apparently changed injectors and various other parts. They replaced the inlet manifold and the EML came on even more frequently. I got a phone call from the dealership today (4 Oct) to say the Tech centre have given up and VW have asked them to start looking for a suitable van replacement. So after 2 years and 5 months, VW have finally thrown in the towel.

So my saga has reared the exactly and tends to be when I am driving at around a frugal 65. T6 150 Euro 6.

Van Mapped when out of warranty with 40k on the clock
First time van remapped, p20EE started showing up after about 2 years driving.
Read on OBDII and decided to clear it.
Did about 650 miles light back on, again, cleared it and drive again roughly 650 miles, light back on, again cleared it and repeat.
Always seems to come on when I'm doing my best to keep the mpg up so I am confident that I can repeat this if I do lots of motorway driving @ 65mph.
Next thing that happened the Ad Blue orange spanner came on giving circa 600 miles so took it to my mapper for a look.
Identified that my EGR pipe had a crack in it so ordered a new one from VW, had that fitted, cleared the EML and got an AdBlue delete and updated ECU map.
All seemed ok but did notice a bit more soot on heavy foot.
Last October I had my MOT. Failed excessive emmisions and I mean excessive. Threshold around 0.6? and mine was 5.0 and very smokey.
Took it back to my mapper, explained all this and couldn't work out what was wrong.
Was pretty much at the end of my tether and thinking huge VW bill coming up and being without a vehicle.
So decided that before going to VW or another specialist I'd get it back to stock map and with Ad Blue added back in.
Added some injector cleaner, dpf flush and ragged the living daylights out of it and hey presto my emmisions came back to normal.
After 6 months of driving no light - coincidence or the fact that my 65mph cruising hasn't been done?
Van's been stood for a lot more now since I've been working from home since Covid so recently I've had it remapped again (4 months ago). I've done a few thousand miles since but not motorway and more varied than a sensible frugal cruise.
Until yesterday, drove a 100 mile route mainly motorway and @ 65mph mainly on cruise control and yet again the P20EE error has re-emerged. I should add this was a return journey - the way up I was keen to get to the festival and I was 75 - 80 no light.
So without any science I am convinced that the remap and cruising at a lower speed I can get that P20EE to come back on and then eventually end up with the Ad Blue 650 mile left light on.
Could this be a fuelling issue / mismatch with the AdBlue system?

I'm going to speak to my mapper this week but does seem a coincidence based on what others are stating or just the 'VW way'?

Did anyone get anything back from Pendle as I'm sure these are all generic maps?

Why bother adding the map back on again?

Why not just go back to stock?

Plus running an EGR delete is illegal anyway on UK roads and a mot failure. And only for track drives. ,...(Tampering with a car/van engine emission control system)

So why not stick with stock.? (I have a 150 and a 204 and find the 150 fine to drive around even fully loaded)

Haven't EGR deleted, didn't last time, was an ADBlue delete which isn't on there this time. Remapped for MPG. Yeah I may well go back stock but hoped maybe someone had heard something back from Pendle re the map. Looking at other threads I may need a s/w upgrade from VW on stock map anyway.

Maybe go back to stock for a year and see how things settle.... at least you will have proper codes to work with is they are any other faults.
