DSG oil change now a bang when pulling away

Hi All,

I have been a T6 own for about 8 very uneventful months.

Recent decided to service the van so I could baseline the service time. I have alway serviced own vehicles, don’t trust the garages. I researched and followed the DSG oil change process, bought quality oil. And proper fill kit.

Twice now I have experienced a jolt and bang when pulling away after breaking. It’s really inconsistent. It’s aloud and quite violent jolt/bang. Feels from the gear box only happens after breaking, not coming to a complete stop and then trying to pick up and pull away.

An observation I had when changing the gearbox oil filter was that there was oil left in the filter housing on top of the gear box, also the oil in the filter appeared to be much clearer the what came out of the main gearbox.

Anyone experienced a similar issue. As I said very inconsistent.

Any thoughts/ info gratefully received.

Just had my Dsg changed
Having spoken to several mechanics it’s not just a case of changing the oil …. Temps have to be observed and some fiddling with software too
£100 well spent on professional labour imho

I changed my dsg oil myself . Just follow the procedure, empty oil from both drains . Fill to correct level ( probably 6 litres if memory serves) at temperature and then cycle through the gears . I didn’t have vcds at the time so used an infrared thermometer to check temps

Yes I got up to temp and then cycled through the gears.

That's not the same as running basic settings through VCDS. The clutch kiss points need to be relearned after an oil change.

That’s interesting as there is no mention of this on any of the literature (both VW and forum) that I have found.

I was aware that a clutch change would require the relearning of the clutch bite point.

In the mean time I have run a level check process again and this time no oil came out, so have ordered more oil and fill and recheck levels again. Thinking it’s now that I didn’t quite fill with enough oil, so a low oil issue.

Will keep folk posted.

Where does it say that? I've never heard of this for any VW DSG or Audi S-tronic box. All the oil changes I've done just involve the usual fill up, cycle the gears and drain off the excess at the correct temperature in VCDS. All vehicles have driven identically after the oil change.

I've not seen it written anywhere but after doing my first dsg fluid change on a T5.1 years ago it wasn't smooth after. I used aftermarket Hyperdrive oil not VW and their customer service rep suggested to run basic settings and it cured the notchy changes. Since then I've done 5 fluid changes and always run it straight after. I don't see any reason not to, only takes a few minutes.

100% you do adaptations after dsg oil change. It teaches various things like the new viscosity of the oil so it knows how the oil will build pressure and how long the valves need to open to do this. Also allows for gearbox wear etc.

What may cause confusion VW maintenance manual state carry out guided functions which does the process for you where as using any other 3rd party software it's listed as basic settings

Either way, I filled the gearbox with another two litres of oil, got up to temperature and the did a level check with the engine running…….. and now all seems well, no more banging and the gear change is a lot smoother…… so suspect it was just not quite enough oil. So all good job done, case and post closed. Thank you all.
