DIY pop top cost savings

Hi all,

I'm curious to know how much £ you can save by doing it yourself if you feel competent with these sorts of diy.

Any info welcomed.

As always, thanks.

James

I would have thought you could possibly save one to two thousand depending on the roof you choose but remember this is a specialist job and given the fact that recently a lot of problems hilo have had with their roofs have been down to poor fitting Which bare in mind are registered companies. I think undertaking a job like this without experience would be pretty risky , especially when your van could be worth up to 50 grand !! But yeh you could save a few quid if you did it yourself if you have the balls ;)

I Assisted fitting my last vans Austops. I would happily do that again but the Hilo is much more complicated so I left that to a pro.. there is a saving to be made f you are handy with a jigsaw and have the space to do it.

Definitely a job for trained installers. It's a major part of the structure and strength of the van once you cut a big hole in the roof! Let alone waterproofing, etc.

Would the big players even just supply a roof? Even if they did you'd have no warranty.

Hi James,

It is possible to fit yourself. I fitted mine on my T6 and also fitted the roof on my previous T5.

After a lot of research I decided on the SCA roof. My T5 was LWB and my current van is SWB. Both quite straight forward to install. The roof is brilliant to be honest, no squeaks or leeks. Easy to operate and plenty of room.

I did consider the hi-low ( it looks great when down) but decided against it as there where quite a few unhappy customers at the time. They released a new design but it seems like they still have some problems.

The SCA comes pre assembled with a separate “ring beam reinforcing frame” and pre painted in the colour of your choice.

If your confident and have good diy skills then go for it!

Hi All

Apologies if this has been asked before, but i can't seem to see it anywhere! I have a t6 i'm planning on converting, but the timescales to get various parts done professionally are crazy as there is such demand at the moment! I'm intending on doing the vast majority of the conversion myself as I'm reasonably handy, so has anyone done a DIY pop top? if so, where would you buy the components? is there anyything I need to be looking out for? I'm thinking either SCA or reimo for the quality, but I'm open to suggestions. The build will not be 'budget' by any means.

That looks amazing! how did you find fitting the denby roof? was it particularly difficult?

Cheers, It's definitely not to professional install standard. In hind sight I'd of probably had it fitted but I'm hyper critical of my own work. Mechanically it's very simple. Mark up, cut roof out. Fit strengthening frame and new cantrails.

Hardest part without doubt and I so regret not taking enough time to do it properly and will be re-doing at some point is the canvas. I didn't heat the plastic up to go around the form of the roof before fixing and I'm left with raised corners on the front edge. I had to pack full of silicon and it looks awful. Water tight but crap. What I will probably do is release the canvas completely. Lower the roof to give me excess canvas material and do it all again. Big job but I'm not happy. Shaping the roof to the body is a crappy job too. So messy with all the dust grinding the fibreglass down.

With this in mind the price you pay to get one fitted far outweighs the time you will input into it. Satisfaction is great but it's definitely not for your average DIYer.

Not wanting to put you off, it's a great satisfaction knowing you've done it. Good luck if you go for it.

Morning all,

Im trying to find an elevating roof for my T6 LWB.

Where can I find one that’s supply only?
I’m fairly open to brands, skyline, reimo, Austops, SCA.

Thanks
