Might have to take it out and look.
I have a similar thing on another car and it works using a pin that follows a track. There is a notch at the closed position. When you push the lid it moves the pin out of the notch and the lid opens. There is also a rack and pinion arrangement to damp the opening.
Could be completely different on the VW of course!

Im Worried that you’re right and it’s needing to come out, and there in lies the problem, how to get it out
I’ve slipped a piece of card down the side (inside) and it sort of clicks shut but you can see it’s not flush, far from!!
May be covered under warranty

Have managed to pull it off without breaking anything (a clip breaks and def not warranty covered lol)
Can see 2 springs, 1 either side but can’t really get to them as the dsg stick prevents me from lifting it right out
Will see later if I can’t get under it when I lift it out again
Any idea what I do with the springs??
