Big Brakes: talk to me

I think an oem set of 340s is a decent upgrade and enough for most. My stock 300s were slightly worrying on some of the quick roads in the alps last year and my vans not even close to a max weight limits.

On that note has anyone got a set of 340s,discs,pads,calipers and caliper spacers going?

Are these front disc and pads only. What can be done on the rear ?
Not much to be done to the rear bar a rear disc upgrade - mainly for asthetics. On the Transporter most of the braking is handled by the front end.

Upgrading rear brakes Is only necessary if the front brakes are seriously upgraded , Not just transporter front brakes do all the work , most cars on the road do , the balance between front and back brakes Must be correct. Too much back brakes will be a disaster.

After reading a lot about brakes upgrading I understand big brakes will not make the van brake in less distance. However I would expect big brake to be more fading resistant. Am I correct?
I was flying down the autobahn at 200 km/h on the clock with nobody around. Van felt it could take it, planted and safe when suddenly had to jump on the brake pedal, deer crossing the motorway. All went well but less than a mile later had to jump on the brakes again and the brakes were not responsive at all. Probably overheated.
In this situation would the big brakes make any difference?

Yep 100% would help sounds like you cooked them the first time.

hi sorry to jump on the thread , how do you find the Forge Big Brake kit ? interested to get but wouldn't mind finding out how they are ?

We do a T32 T 6 calliper ( new ) and we can couple that to a set of Nutexa discs plain or slotted with performance pads

£696.00 incl vat supplied
Hello, Anymore information of this brake upgrade? Presume these will be non genuine parts at this price? T32 - 340mm upgrade? Thanks

Bigger brakes do control heat better and can grip the disc harder without locking up. These are benefits and although it’s an expensive upgrade worth doing .

What is the minimum alloy size to fit big brakes? Will they fit under 18” alloys?

The forge callipers in our picture has to have 20 inch Because the disc is 405 mm also because the veeman wheels have the valve in the middle of the wheel not on outer edge , we had to use race car concealed valves .
forge do a 360 mm and 380 mm. They won’t fit 18 inch wheels. The T32 calliper is the answer for smaller wheels .

I have got disks and pads by Nutexa. Great product and even on standard (330 I think) fading is much better than Oem.I was quoted 1650 for upgraded callipers, braided lines, disks and pads (front).

I wouldn’t touch the 380mm Revo/Alcon setup. I have it on my T32 and there is barely any difference between the stock 340mm and the 380mm from Revo. They are noisy as well. I’m actually taking the Alcon kit off mine as the discs have lasted all of 20,000 miles and will cost £1500 to replace….. that’s the parts, without the labour. They are a pure vanity item if you already have the T32 brakes. If anyone out there who does carbon ceramics is interested in developing a Surface Transform carbon ceramic package for the transporter I would be very interested. I’m going to own my van for many years and would like a setup that works and lasts. £1500 every 2 years plus labour is a waste of money. I would rather spend £10k or more upfront and know that they will outlive the vehicle.

Hi Clive
done 9248 miles now on my Nutexa Frictions big brake kit and Discs are barely marked 350mm x 2 piece discs. our products are fitted by @Dav-Tec and @CRS Performance and also plenty of private sales.
what sizes discs do you need ?? happy to look into a set of our discs for you.

Russ

Thanks @Russbaker79 but I’m done with steel upgrades. I’ll only go down the CC route now. The problem is that my van runs very heavy all the time. Once bitten twice shy for me with anything steel and non OEM I’m afraid. I need to start digging to find a really competent brake specialist and give them my van for a month, so that they can engineer a CC upgrade. Hopefully there is someone out there. In 2013 I used a great engineering company to install some massive brembo callipers and discs on my defender. I can’t for the life of me remember who it was. At the time they were making titanium parts for the Lotus F1 team, so their product was next level quality engineering. I can’t even remember where they were based.
