Badjamins van conversion

Just pricing up conduit and wire. Wondering if I need a crimping tool for terminal connectors or will pliers or mole grips work. So many things still to buy!!!

Crimp tools are really useful. For the 16mm cable it’s essential. A wire stripping gadget saved me many hours and much cursing.

My most surprisingly useful gadget was a lighter-gas powered soldering iron which has a heat torch end. I can use this to heat shrink onto all the connectors which makes it look more pro.

Sounds like I have more essential purchases to budget for then. Thanks for this mate

A lot of head scratching and a heavy feeling I'm gonna mess this up, but here is my electrics diagram. Will be updated with cable size and fuse ratings etc at some point. This will mostly be in a cupboard void and some isolators will be located in the upper wardrobe.

I added (after I first installed) an isolator to the various 12v FB loads. The USB and other bits have a small drain which meant my battery was constantly going through charge cycles even when not in use. That’s very much cut down now (not eliminated, as it has its own Bluetooth).

You could also run the earth for various 12V stuff to the nearest earth point on the van. I did this for my 12v lights which halves the amount of cable to buy, and helps with voltage drop.

Thanks very much for this input. Feelin quite alone with it so good to hear some friendly input/advice

Selling my refurbed swivel as I have a new (un rusty) kiravans swivel. Am contemplating selling both to get a sliding swivel. Does anyone have one and do they recommend?

Thanks @T6 Syd We have plans to head up Edinburgh/Fife/Stirling area at start of May for a few days but we have been workin none stop for the past week pretty much so no time for chilling (or killing) in it. We're really happy with it. I need to make a decision about electrics. I'm unsure about having it all in the void under the drawer.

Anyway it's coming up to a year of ownership and Jolene has come a long way from being a panel van in that time.

Still to do

Pop top, rear quarter panels, diesel heater, fridge and electrics and potentially sell my swivels to get an ms craft one. Then focus on exterior jobs. Paint corrections, swamper wheels and cab window tints perhaps and SS side rails.

Inspirational stuff, mate. I hope to do some of the more donkey work on mine, but will deffo be getting a sparky in for the leccy bits as that scares me 😄 .

Well done you.

After some amazing logistical altruism from the amazing @Trouts and his brother I now have rear quarter SWB panels to carpet and install. The absence of the panels has been a major hindrance and now I have them I can crack on with electrics and put a major full stop behind conversion work for this year. Lots of further progress to come. Thanks also to @Beng for the panels!

morning @Badjamin
thanks for the kind words - i don't even think my wife has ever called me amazing?!
sorry i missed you. looking forward to seeing the build progressing.

cheers buddy

Seems like such a little thing having a red 16mm and a H07RN cable (EHU) sticking out from here but routing these cables was a job I was dreading. Not in any way complete. Need to drill for two glands in the hatch under the bonnet still... but progress!

Some electrical updates. Got the 16mm feed from starterbattery through the grommet but the chunk AF H07RN cable wasn't happening. As you can see we managed to get it through the upper part but on trying to reinstall access panel it seems that bit needs to be clear to accept the panel so will be putting a cable gland somewhere for the EHU cable. Got an inline fuse fitted ready for an 80A midi.

A lot of mess = productivity

MPPT/B2B... what does the ignition wire earth to... hmmm

Mostly in, I have a battery securing plate on order as I just fancied one... Also is that the biggest fused bus bar you have ever seen?

Current state is as below, with more to do. Under seat is mostly there though. AC charger tails to extend to under here and maybe an isolator...

More to come in the coming weeks. Praise be for the efforts and inspiration from T6F members for pushing me forwards with this. Especially @Bigsidavies for pretty much doing 90% of this install.

Additionally, I have carped on quite often that the heat dissipation fins on the back of B2B/MPPT's needs to be clear for as much airflow as possible so to be clear the wooden batten I have secured to only goes as low as indicated below.

I would imagine the up currents it produces may amplify my flatulations...
