Aftermarket 16inch steels rubbing front brakes

I’ve just purchased steel wheels from a well known store, with a good reputation to fitting correct wheels. They were advertised as 16x8 and my van is T6.2 T30.

The ETD is 35 (stock 51).

After fitting them it was obvious the fronts are rubbing the brake calliper. I phoned the store and they said most likely they’re updated brakes from VW. They said they would send 5mm spacers for the front to fix the problem.

Is this a suitable solution? Or are they trying to bodge it? And would I not want the same spacers on the rear to keep it inline?

The whole reason I chose this store was to avoid any issues with fitment.

I checked the wheel weights and no they’re not stuck on the bit where it scraped. It was my thought too.

The calipers on the inside of the rim.
I guess the 5mm shim as suggested by the store will fix it. But should I be putting it on the back wheels also?

Unless you specifically want 8" wheels , I would stay with the standard VW rims.

I have a t30 with standsrd 16 inch wheels but they are only 6.5" wide.

There’s enough concave welding there to put them in the skip.

Because its a 6.1? Im not sure about the 308mm callipers but the 340mm callipers are smaller on the 6.1 than the 6. You certainly wont have 340mm brakes if you can get a 16" wheel on.

The welds are concave, either overcurrent or too high traverse / insufficient feed, terrible weld quality.

Almost certainly welded by a robot, start of welds are cold with probably no penetration the rest is concave, lack of weld material.

OCD, seen too many crap welds hurt people. No problem with 5 day pants but welding……

I'd just look into returning the wheels.

I’d just return them as not fit for purpose. They obviously know that is an option open to you hence they are quick to send out some spacers.
The rears always look further in than the fronts, so my guess is spacers only on the fronts will look awful, then you’ll have to shell out over £100 to get decent rear spacers.
Just send them back at their expense.

Yes. I think that’s the only option. I’ve emailed them and told them they need to sort it out. The issue I have is that the tyres I ordered are now fitted as otherwise I would have ended up paying for the fitment and removal at the time they didn’t fit.

I’ve written them an email and hopefully they’ll come good and sort the issue. They are a very popular company so I want to give them a chance to fix the issue before I name them on here. But we’ll see.

Tbh it was a combination of tyre availability for the size and cost. And I wanted to keep it fairly stock, and rather have a larger side wall. Mainly the side wall tbh.
