Adblue not registering

Sorry to post another adblue post, nothing I looked at really matched my question.

We’ve topped up adblue as stated and still says 500 miles left to drive the van. It’s a converted campervan (2020 T6.1) and our only car. VW service centre say they can’t see us until 15th December, so I basically have to drive it until it breaks down then get it recovered to VW if that’s before 15th Dec. The van doesn’t have VW assist.

The warning says put in 0.75gallons so I assume I can’t give it another go as been told have to put in at least 4 litres to register.

What are the chances of me finding a local garage that can see this? Short of ringing them all round, any tips for the kind of garage that might be able to fix this?

Thank you in advance for any help

I had an Adblue problem on my 2016 T6. A general local garage wasn’t able to help so I took it to an independent VW van specialist who had much of the VW diagnostic software, but not all. I ended up taking it to VW and whilst they tried the diagnostics on the Adblue system this did not flag up any fault. In the end my local VW specialist was the one who sorted it referring to the various TPI’s that VW put out. Weirdly replacing a glow plug as per TPI2057802/7 eventually solved my problem.

I would be tempted to see if there are any VW van specialists in your area and if so see if they have the diagnostic software for the Adblue system. Good luck

Hi All,

Sorry another Adblue question. I've just brought a T6 Transporter and noticed that the adblue doesn't register anything, Is this correct? will something show up once the level drops to a certain amount?

Thank you

Welcome to the Forum!

That's interesting... it should register it right away...

Any chance to get the van scanned with VCDS diagnostics tool?

Another one here:

I picked Up a new van from the dealers a few weeks ago and the rep reinforced that I should never over fil the adblu, or even take it too close to full, as it can (and frequently does) cause the sensor to think the tank is empty when it’s actually not! I’ve described that really badly, but he did say that in these situations the only fix is to get the sensor reset at a cost of whatever the dealer decides to charge for 30 minutes work. Hope this is not the case for you!

Hi all,

Many thanks for the info - Bit of an update. So i added some adblue (about 1 litre then it was full) then this strange noise started, a ticking/clicking sound from the adblue tank but would only tick once the ignition was turned off. I disconnected the battery overnight as i didn't want to wake to a dead battery! re-connected and now the adblue mileage show 20243 but still ticking.

I disconnected a lead which was connected to the adblue tank and the ticking stop - still disconnected i decided to try and start the van and it started with no errors! so now i'm totally confused. Had a friend scan the van but he said he couldn't communicate with a module which he's now thinking the adblue could of been mapped out (If this is such a thing) hence the 3 dashes. I there a way i can find out for sure if this is the case?

Thanks

My ad blue warning light stays on started a 1 hr journey at 6000 miles now warning light on showing 650 miles the tank is full, done the ignition for 30 secs went for 10 mile drive now its 600 miles. Can a faulty DPF system mess with the ad blue sensor.

I have a 68 reg T6. Had it nearly 4 years recently the adblue remaining went from 2500 to 650 miles instantly then continued drops every 50 miles.
I booked an appointment at a VW dealer. On the way there the fault righted itself and then showed 4000 miles (I had put 5 litres in)
I carried onto the garage and asked if the fault would show up on the diagnostics check if not showing on the dash. They said it would not so I cancelled the appointment and went home.
Has anyone else had this do you know what it is and is there a solution as worrying.

Regards Gordon

I had the same fault every now and again. It was normally preceded by an ‘insufficient flow’ on the EGR fault.

Put a new EGR and front and rear pipes on and it’s been as good as gold. They both work in tandem to reduce NOx and the AdBlue will struggle if the EGR is faulty.

May not be the same fault on yours but worth a scan with VCDS or Carista.

21 reg T6.1 ad blue notification on for the the last 3 days . Added 5 litres yesterday and did the reset turning on for 30 plus secs but nothing even after a 10 mile drive.
Going to the stealers to sort but working that the quantity notification wrong considering only a 13 litre tank ??
Will update later but any thoughts ?

When I had an AdBlue vehicle I always topped it up by at least the minimum on the display, otherwise the level may not have risen enough to register.
I suspect the AdBlue tanks on the later T6.1's are bigger.

T6.1 have a 22L / 18k miles range adblue tank...(not sure at what point it changed)

T6 was about 13L 4.5k range adblue tank

The T6.1 does indeed have a larger tank.

True but it says 20 litres max that's 7 litres too much according to the ad blue tank capacity on the t6.1

thanks for this id googled t6.1 ad blue capacity and was quoted 13 litres so much for accuracy ;-)

Don't over fill it.

Just add to the max it asks for.

The level sensor is ultrasonic. If you over fill you will get an error due to the unmetered fluid in the filler neck not being registered.

I'm not sure if I've missed this. The adblue warning light came on yesterday- I think it was probably last filled at a service. It had a 1500 mile warning with a minimum and maximum fill so we filled just below maximum amount but the warning message is still showing and I dont know how to reset it. Any tips? Thank you
Not sure if it’s the same with the 6.1 but I have a 6 and it regularly goes to a similar message 650 miles to empty even when I know it’s got more in. Every time so far it resets it self after a couple of days. It is a well known fault with the 6 not sure but may be similar in the 6.1.
