A few questions - Insurance and Ownership

Hi all,

I am currently considering purchasing a T5, I've been looking around and gone to view a few locally. One of which i like... a lot. I have provisionally arranged to visit it again on the weekend to take for a final test drive with the potential of then buying it.

I has a very good quality conversion in the back complete with a fitted unit including sink, hob and fridge, a rock and roll bed, good sound proofing and trim throughout. Its a 2005 T5 with 175000 on the clock. But has been looked after well... they say.

My main query is around insurance. The van is registered as a camper, do I get van insurance or camper insurance? And where is the best place to go? If van insurance to what extent to you list mods?

Thanks in advance.

I’m with A-Plan who I found have been particularly good. Explain what you have and they will take into account. Make sure you value as a camper as any loss will be capped at the figure you state.

LV have insured a lot of us recently, they do a campervan policy if you search.

I'm currently with LV on a VW Motorcaravan policy, everything has been explained to them including all modifications along the way...

It started as a panel van so was insured as a Van, then I modified it and replaced the suspension, wheels, front/rear splitter and side bars, I phoned them up and added all the mods to the policy, then when it was fully converted into a campervan I phoned them up again and they rolled all the modifications into a Motorcaravan policy.

Thanks all, LV didn't want to offer a quote, A-Plan was very helpful. Fully Comp, with breakdown, legal cover, courtesy car etc, SCD+Busines for £540
That’s strange that LV wouldn’t quote. Did they say why? As above they’ve picked up lots of business recently on camper or motor caravan conversions. I’m with them too.

Did you go through to their specialist team by phone? When I tried online it kept throwing up a basic van quote, but all sorted quickly by phone. And only about £250 ish from memory, and that was on a brand new van and conversion, so high value.

I tried online with an additional driver, van is 2004/5 with aftermarket conversion so maybe they werent too keen on that?

Aftermarket conversion shouldn’t be an issue - that’s what most are. Worth giving them a call I think as the online algorithm doesn’t seem to work very well.
