2018 Manual 5 speed 102PS: Gearbox oil change thoughts?

As above, I have a 2018 campervan conversion (from new), that is just coming up to 7 years old and 41000 miles. It's not had a hard life, vast majority motorway miles, driven sympathetically and never towed anything. It has been serviced as per recommended service schedule and drives fine.

As far as I understand the manual gearboxes (unlike the DSG) aren't included in the service schedule. Any merit in having the gearbox oil changed?

Yes, the 5 speed gearbox isn’t the most reliable anyway. The oil change is an easy job to do yourself. IMO a garage shouldn’t charge more than 30 min labour but don’t be surprised if they charge an hour.
Opie oils can provide advice on the oil through the online chat function and the generally have the best prices, ask for the discount code, they no longer advertise it.

I’ve just changed the oil in my 5speed box and it was easy.

Tools - 17 mm hex plug socket. I got the 3/8ths drive Draper one. Oil syringe - I have a 30 year old castrol gear oil bottle where squeezing it forces the oil up an internal tube thus defying gravity! It was my late fathers.

There is a drain plug at the lowest point and a fill plug half way up the differential case. Check you can undo the fill plug before removing the drain plug.

I measured the oil that came out and it was just under 2 litres if you believe oil bottle measure marks. Google suggests its 2L to fill so 2 went back in.

My drive slopes so oil was exiting before I got the full 2 Litres in so I had to turn it around. Decided to fill via the wheel arch with the wheel off rather than remove the undertray again! Got the last 1/2 L in ok.

I used Febi GL4 75W which is widely purported to be the VW oil.
