1st Attempt at Insulating ever.

Hi all, having recently become a member of the forum and owning my first ever Transporter, yet alone a T6. I'm having a go at sound deadening and thermo lining the van.

I've been using Silent coat 2mn and then Dodo thermo lining. My question is, does it have to be all perfect and neat. I've found some areas really difficult so I instead I have been using the offcuts to fill in the gaps.

Is this ok or am I doing it totally wrong? I've attached some pics.

Any advice would be well received

Thanks.

Hi
Looks like your doing a great job and using all the small pieces up too.

When you tap on the side of the van now you should get a dull thud sound, compared to a bare panel which will be a tinny sound, then it’s doing its job.

I did it exactly like you and had good results . Some people just put on a couple of sheets per panel which probably would still be ok, but I think a more thorough job is to do all the panel, then dodo mat on top to complete the job.

Thanks for the reply gents. I didn't know if I was being too fussy, but in the end decided that no body will see it as it's going to insulated further, ply lined and then carpet over.

Glad I'm going in the right direction.

Has any applied thermo lining behind the wires and connectors for the rear lights? I've left a space as I wasn't sure. I've attached a pic for advice or what others have done. In the pic you can see the silent coat and then the thermo lining where I stopped.

Am sure ye will be fine if ye miss that bit out lol , mines has probably got know were near as much thermal as yours installed and I haven't had a problem :)

Thanks for the responses. Another day at it again today, before it goes in for plylining and carpet, rear speakers and some lights in roof. I've also seen it's possible to have usb ports in the door pillars behind the passenger seat. Anyone got these and had any probs?

Progress report. Almost done, next step is to insulate with recycled plastic insulation and then leave it to the expert to finish off.

Thanks for the reply. I am in two minds whether to do that or not. The guy who is going to carpet says not to as carpet will give some degree of sound deadening. What's your thoughts? Or indeed what's the general verdict?

My arches aren't carpeted so couldn't comment on if it does .may be the case the sound deadening causes problems with the carpet but again a couldn't comment , hopefully someone with carpet can help on this one

Thanks again for the reply. I've used what I had left on the arches as best I could. Hopefully it will lessen some of the noise.

Never thought of that. Will certainly look to do that. It's a certainly a learning process.

Right, I've done what I can in sound deadening and thermolining. I've now got a roll of the recycled plastic loft insulation stuff. Three questions I have which I am in debate with myself about.
1. If I'm just using it as a day van and not converting it, do I need it?

2. If I'm going to use it, do I need to go mad with it and stuff it everywhere.

3. Is it a fire hazard if I out it behind where the wires are for the rear light clusters and grounding points?

Thanks again in advance for answers.

I wouldn't bother with that, what you have done is good enough for sleeping in as it is, some conversions have less in!
