The noise seems to follow the engine rpm.

So look at timing belt tensioner and rollers.?

Water pumps bearing.?

AC compressor.?

What spec van?.
Miles?
Service history?

Highline 150bhp, transporter. It’s recently had timing belt and water pump changed. So shouldn’t be that. The mileage is 59k. Fingers crossed it nothing to serious. Also that is at stand still, not in gear.
Been serviced every 10k(ish) bought couple months ago
Thanks
Daniel

Does the sound go when on gear or driving?

Dsg or manual?

Possible clutch release bearing?

So it sounds the same driving or not, always there but does seem to get louder sometimes. When I get to 4/5 gear it’s harder to hear, but this could be dues to speed. It’s a manual gear box.

Cheers

Guess i'll have to take it to my local VW guy. thanks for all the help and fingers crossed its nothing major

Cheers

The MP3 compression is distorting the sound a lot, but that sounds like the power steering pump to me, is there oil in the reservoir?

MP3 defo sounds muddy.

OP said "I checked the fluid level on the power steering pump and all seems fine " so assuming the PS is ok?

Sorry yeah the audio isn't great, i will try a video and will upload shortly. Yeah the fluid level look ok and seemed clear. Im guessing its just some bearing gone somewhere , but want to get to the bottom of it before it causes any major problems.

Hey guys, here is a link to a video, wouldn't let me add it straight in so had to go via youtube.

Gotcha but could still be the pump, or alternator.

Why not remove the aux belt and run it again?

I did notice the Alternator seems a little "lazy" i guess you could say. as in sometime it felt stiff to start would not like any kind of low voltage from the battery.
maybe its this

thanks for the replies, all good stuff

Cheers

is it ok to run the engine without the Aux belt? also haven't a clue which one this would be :),
do you have any reference for me to identify the belt.

thanks

You won't have any power steering if you do so don't drive it, but you can confirm or eliminate the Alternator, steering pump, aircon pump and the aux belt tensioner. You can run it and listen to the sound.
It's the outer belt you can see through the Driver's wheel.

If you are not confident, then leave it to a mechanic.

So took it to my local VW specialist, and he did exactly as you stated above, unfortunately he could not isolate the sounds to a particular aux part. Said its not the engine which is good to know. but told me to just keep driving with the sound until it gets really bad.. said the other option was to start swaping parts out that would be very expensive process.. oh well looks like i have to live with it for the time being which sucks.

Thanks
for the advice though appreciated
Daniel

I’ve just had my alternator replaced on a 2017 T6, the noise sounded very very similar to your video clip. I had it swapped for a reconditioned OEM VW unit. The garage told me it was a bearing related noise.

Thanks for the feedback, yeah I still have the noise but the garage I took it to said they could not isolate which part was making the noise.. which sucks as I want to get it fixed under warranty. Maybe I’ll pickup a second hand one from eBay and see if it is that part. If you don’t mind me asking , how much did it cost , ball park figure is fine,

Thanks
Daniel

I have the same noise ,recently had a new alternator fitted under warranty but still their also just had cambelts and waterpump done but still their

Hmm yeah it’s one of the aux parts.. it’s hard to know which one it is.. the garage guy said to keep driving until it gets worse, but seems this could take while and annoys the heck outta me tbh.. any way I’ll give it a month and take it back
