Just got back from the first expedition of the year, just a weekend to Chester Zoo accompanied by granddaughter and her 3 year old cousin. Picked up granddaughter from school on Friday and drove straight to C&MC site at Chester Fairoaks. Nice little site, well organised as usual with the club, very clean and tidy, very friendly welcome from the staff. We picked a pitch directly between the two most important site features, the play area and the toilet block.
Saturday morning we disconnected from the awning and drove the 10 minutes to the zoo. The car park staff there decided that the swb T6 was a big vehicle, so directed us to the overflow car park where vans and buses park up which was great as this is located right next to the zoo entrance. Must be the fixed high top that fooled them...
A great day was had in the zoo, we looked into many enclosures and saw grass, bushes and rocks. They really need to work on persuading animals to walk around in the open. Fortunately animals were discovered in other enclosures, but sadly there was a huge queue for the bat house (one of my favourites) so we missed that. The new African Savannah area was very good, decent wide open spaces for the inhabitants to roam around.
Lots of fun activity areas for the youngsters too. It's a huge place to walk around though and both children were exhausted by mid afternoon so we left a couple of hours before closing time and headed to the shops for some essential supplies followed by an excellent meal at The Mill at Upton. Then a 10 minute drive back to the campsite where I discovered that I am getting much better at re-docking with the awning. Kids slept solidly all night but still woke before 7am. While wife and I went about dismantling everything ready for departure, the children could be seen sat at the folding table in front of the van trying to sell our possessions to any passing campers. Fortunately they had no takers.
Uneventful trip home, both youngsters returned to their mothers, feeling very tired now.
