When and where to do service - getting conflicting advice.

Hi everyone - I bought a t6.1 t32 kombi in May 2023 with 5k miles on the clock. It was an ex-demo from a VW commercial center, and was on the approved used scheme.
When I purchased the van a fault light relating ti iulk came on the drive home - i cant remember the exact fault but it was some silly complication that caused it to show
and to put mind at rest they did a complete oil change for me.

So all that to say van has just hit 20k miles and telling me to get a service, and I've contacted my dealer and theyve said because of oil change the service now isnt due till 25k
miles. Is that right? Im confused by this as the first oil change wasn't a true service.

And in a related question, they want to charge me £450 plus vat for a service, whereas my local garage I've previously gone to for my other vehicles who I like only will charge £180.
They've told me the only difference is they can't update the digital logbook. Given I have 2 years left on my VW warranty is it generally worth the extra to get a dealer service?

Annually, or 10k miles from the last service, whichever comes first.

Brake fluid at 3 years, then every second year thereafter. This is essential as VW absolutely will not pay goodwill or warranty on stuff like ABS pumps if this hasn't been done.

There is a 20k-ish regime, but thats aimed at high mileage fleet users that run a lot of vehicles and for whom maintenance costs are significant. These users tend to treat the vans as pretty much disposable, so saving shekels for short term benefit, not longevity, is the priority.

Its not your local garage, so not worth comparing. Use an independent with the necessary knowledge and you can save money while, technically, still satisfying the warranty requirements, but you exclude yourself from any chance of goodwill if you suffer a major failure just outside warranty. Choose accordingly, dependent upon whether saving shekels or maximising potential ongoing support is your priority.

the 18K service interval is mad (too long), ask any mechanic and they will say do it every 10K.

and FWIW - from new the first oil service should be as soon as the engine run in period is over 4-8miles. ( i done mine at 10k)

++++++++

if your in warranty then it might be best to say with VW for works - just in case.

saying that you CAN use a indy garage - BUT:

they must be vat registered.
they must use OEM parts,
them must follow the OEM guidance.

ANY deviation from the above and any future related claim will be rejected,

I would stick with the dealer until the end of the factory warranty mate. I took mine to a local indy for it's first service under my ownership ( bought it with 7k on the clock) but they weren't in a position to offer any goodwill like I've subsequently learnt VW can. Things like software updates, etc. I lot of the warranty claims you see reported on here I think are actually just done under goodwill. Don't get me wrong dealing with VW in my experience has been hard work
Also I'm pretty sure without the digital logbook up to date, they will try very hard not to honour the warranty.
I would just get it serviced annually.

Indy service during warranty period may effect and future All-in cover claims as well?

Have your called your three nearest VW CV dealers to get service quotes?

I have a full service every year , at my local VW independent garage, the VW Service centers are over an hour so I have never used them with this van.
I would always get an annual service.

Thanks so much. I’ll do that - obviously missed the annual thing but not but a huge amount, hopefully it doesn’t cause issues.

Thanks - it’s crazy how different this is ti what has been recommended to me by VW! Hopefully I haven’t massively messed up!

I was in a bit of a quandary when I bought mine with 6k on the clock, once I found out it had a service plan, i went in to book it in for a service, they advised me it was on an extended plan and didnt need one for a while. Thinking on I chose to go inbetween and it was booked in at 17 months [i know 18 would be mid way, but that would be next week when van is in convertors] I will keep it flexible deoending on the mileage i do, but I suspect it will be 12-18 months.
