Hello All, just spoke to Vw as i need to change my DSG oil I asked for the filter and oil price to be told they don't change the DSG filters as they are long life??
Is this correct as i need to go pick up the oil today..
He said you would need to strip the gearbox to change them as you need to make sure the filters seated correctly??
Thanks in advance

You’d be better off having a chat with a good independent VW specialist.
I could be wrong but it’s my understanding that it’s good practice to change the filter and that you don’t need to strip the gearbox to do it.

Thanks for the reply didn't make sense to me to be fair. I went and got the oil no filter tho as the person behind the desk backed up what the other person said on the phone..he looked at on the computer under my vin amd said i do have the long life filter and just to change the oil..going to do that for this change but will look into it more for next time

Hi, did you change dsg oil? My van is 2015 and done 73000 but don’t think oil has been changed. Have been quoted £230
but will have a go myself. Was it a mission and did you change filter in the end.

Sorry for late reply no it wasn't to bad you will need a Vw Dsg adapter to screw into the gearbox sump plug got mine off amazon but ebay have them aswell..you will also need some sort of oil pump to pump the oil in..Vcds or another way of reading the gearbox temp helps when refilling to make sure correct amount has been filled..once you have done it once you will feel more confident for the future will do mine yearly now good luck

Ok,thanks for info. Temp censor is the awkward bit but I’ll see what I can find.

changed my oil and filter DSG today
bought a gearbox adapter from ebay £7
used a brand new garden sprayer pump from homebase £4
genuine oil & filter from TPS £150
the filter is there for a reason ie: its a filter so change it , mine was dirty
job done / perfect

Long life or not, I agree with your view: filter is there for a reason, so change it when changing the oil? Or, am I being a bit simple?!!

Even if the filter has capacity for a long change interval a visual inspection is a good check for metallic debris.

jog, no ur not being a bit simple, dont know why you should cthink that, im a retired engineer in all walks of life, and DXX says it all as you can check for any debris
my filter was dirty and so was the oil
gearchanges are much smoother now.

Got mine booked into a local specialist next month for DSG oil change, said they always change filter as a matter of course even though it is supposedly long life !!!

Well, I am as far removed from an engineer as it is possible to be…! But, when SWMBO complains to me about the washing machine, dishwasher or tumble-dryer playing up, the first thing I do is check the blooming filter for crud!!!

I get @DXX explanation on it being a long-life filter and how an inspection will suffice but I’m not convinced that VW are saying they’d do that at least. “Ah, it’s long life, mate” isn’t the answer!!!

Who’s your local specialist? Further southwest or Salisbury direction?

I doubt they do remove the filter and check the condition. They don’t even remove the wheels to check the brakes.
It’s a commercial vehicle, the only time it makes money is when it’s hammering about with deliveries.
So a fleet manager wants a long period between servicing and minimum cost when being serviced. Once the fleet life is up in say 5 years nobody gives a flying f*** about the reliability as long as it’s good on the day it’s sold on.
An old reliable van is probably a van manufacturers worst nightmare.

In an industrial situation an expensive gearbox would have an oil change after a short run in period as it would ‘knock the lumps off’, flush and give an opportunity to check for an unusual level of wear.
In the auto’ world failures just seem to generate more income.
Given the last 2 weeks debate, partly on consumption and waste the car manufacturers haven’t quite got a handle on it.
