VW Sat-Nav - Why Bother?

Hi, if you go into the setting menu you can change the route calculation between short, fast and economical. Which one you have selected does/can dramatically change the route it will use - I just use the economical setting and generally it calculates a decent route.
You can, if you wish, tell it to use all three and display them all on the screen so you can pick which one you want before you set off - that way you can see the routes before you set off and select the one you want.
If you want to use your phone then you will need to have paid the extra for ‘app connect’ or have it retro installed - you can easily check by going into the menu setting and scrolling to the app connect setting.
Hope this helps
Hi Nigel, Many thanks for the info and I will check it out later on as my van is going back to the dealers for a problem I had with the media system switching itself straight off when the engine is turned off and the stop start has never worked since we have had the van.
There is also some paintwork to be rectified (lacquer runs) and they did not even prepare or valet the vehicle before we purchased the van up from VW dealers 3 months ago and we are still waiting for them to call us to do the valet so they can do it when they have got the van hopefully,
Obviously the van did not have a pre-sale check before they gave us the van hence the problems we are having now. Regards

You might want to reconsider getting VW to do a ‘valet’ in my experience all they do is spray everything with a horrible silicon based product. You would be better doing it yourself with some decent products and saving yourself the future grief of trying to get it cleaned off. - just a thought.

Same with any Garmin or Satmap hand held GPS .
Hundreds of pounds for a device with a touchscreen inferior to that of a £100 phone. Dreadful mapping unless you spend more hundreds on OS maps.

I paid nearly £500 for a Garmin Zumo 660 motorcycle Satnav - Not only did I have to pay an extra £80 for updates, I had to buy an SD card as the internal storage wasn't big enough.
I will say the information on the Zumo screen is excellent and easy to customise, whereas the VW Satnav screen is useless.

I bought my first GPS receiver in 1996 and have bought many since then. I've found modern built-in car and motorhome Sat Nav's are all inferior for my needs.

I now define the typical modern day devices as Sat Navs. If you want to get to a known place and you know the postcode, then they are OK.

But now retired, I generally want to travel to a general area and divert to see what I discover while travelling. So I use what I define as a GPSr (receiver). I can see what's to the side of my route and decide to change the route. With a motorhome or campervan, the journey is more important than getting there.

I want to previously locate places of interest (waypoints) and if discover I'm nearby, then divert there. I want to keep a track record of where I've travelled. Useful for example looking at photos taken enroute.

The best, but costly, is Garmin's GPSMAP 276Cx. But then VW owners always want the best!

I thought I would try the automatic method which failed twice. I have managed to update it now using the manual method of extracting and copying the files across to the card.
Hi I'm thinking of trying this, did you drag and drop the files onto the E drive card, and did anything need deleting on the SD card first? Thanks

Had the Discover satnav on my last golf which I sold to buy t6. I couldn't update myself so I bought a new ad card from dealer. Swapped it back to the original sd card before the trader received it so I've got a 2019 version somewhere.

Having spent a couple of hours on this, and tried various approaches, I have finally got it to work.

Issue: Caravelle 2016 with Discover Media, with a VW 16GB card that I was trying to update to the latest version.

Problem: The update file size is bigger than the VW SD card. The first thing I did after it failing was bought a Sandisk 64gb card, the changed the format from exFAT to FAT32, still didn't work due to a special lock on it which can be removed but is more complex.

I searched forums with no luck, then found this solution involving downloading the update, unzipping it with the software from the VW site, and then removing surplus to requirements language files as described in the link below to bring it within the size of the VW 16GB card.. It worked perfectly.

This guide is worth watching first:

Hope that helps

My old beta system relied on my daughter’s drawings……which were not to scale!

I have a caravelle and can't get android auto to work at all.. I have the app and tried different cables without success. If there a non obvious menu on the head unit?

If you want a good navigation system use a product from a company that specialises in navigation.
Garmin, free and accurate updates, the only place it has had problems is with stacked roundabouts in Luxembourg and that may well have been me!
Also doubles as a reversing camera monitor.
