The Dpf burns particulates into ash .... Which is part of the exhaust.

But the EGR valve and cooler are before that point so are susceptible to clogging up with soot.

Unfortunately it's only a flush that will clean it....when the flush fails it's time to replace it.

Though VW are making inroads and keep revising the part to work better.... Unfortunately making the EGR cooler less suseptable to clogging makes It less effective at cooling the exhaust gas and therefore less effective EGR system.

But it's not just a T6 thing, all modern diesels have similar issues to a varying degree.

Modern direct injection petrol cars suffer from similar buildup on the back of the valves, from the recirculated gasses...again it's an emission thing, direct in cylinder fuel injection is more efficient and cleaner but with no fuel wash to the valves they start to foul up..... Manufacturer answer is to strip down an decoke the engine.

Yes. It would be simple to design the EGR cooler with gas side isolation and flushing connections, plus a segmented EGR valve to allow stripping and cleaning. However it would increase manufacturing cost due to added complexity (customer pays).

It comes down to economics:
Replace the existing basic EGR unit and scrap old V service more expensive EGR unit with all the associated labour costs.

The one thing VW could have easily improved would be EGR location and accessibility to reduce labour cost.
As with most vehicles, making the engine compartment 100mm longer would solve a multitude of maintenance issues.
