U-Shape or Rock and Roll.

I am looking into swapping out my rear interior, at the minute I have the standard rock and roll bed setup with fridge sink and has hob.
I have e been looking at the shaped interior, there are only two of us and think it would be better for relaxing.
Has anyone gone from the rock and roll setup to shaped and how did you find it. The only issue I can think of is storage, battery and electric locations. All opinions welcome.

Thank you.

I've harboured similar thoughts, but have spent waaay too much on the current layout to seriously contemplate changing it. What I will say is that a u-shaped arrangement probably has a lot more storage potential that a standard r'n'r/side-kitchen set-up - just think of all that under-bench space you could utilise!

Yeah true, mainly We have never used sink or hob olin two years so won’t be needing that either. Trying to find showrooms near to me to have a look at one.

Perhaps you could ask members local to you if you could pop round for a gander at their u-shaped set-ups?

I’m going through the exact same thoughts.
I called Evo today today to discuss swapping out my rock ‘n’ roll bed and the back section of my camper units.
I intend to keep the kitchen pod I have which house is my fridge and sink. U-shape will give me much more space, potentially better storage and of course so much wider bed. Only downside is 2 less passengers when travelling. But for my use probably won’t be an issue.

I would choose U shape if I was building a camper now. Looks very usable and flexible. Can always keep a single seat in rear.

We had a Van-Furniture u-shape in our old T4, will attach some pics below, and when we sold it last year I couldn't believe just how much stuff we stored in those cabinets under the cushions. The pile of camping stuff now in the garage is huge.

We loved it so much we're just about to fit the same set-up in our T6, albeit have gone for buffalo board this time with charcoal cushions. We love the storage it gives, its very socialable and the full width double bed is a dream. Certainly recommend Van Furniture as a company, they've been great for both of my orders.20230928_113542.webp20230928_113755.webp

I thought about fitting brackets for single combi seat, but it would work with this u-shape set up.
Did you mean wouldn’t work?

If so, that depends on how long the section on the passenger side was. Lots of options where you get a shorter unit but with a flip up end that allows you to use as full bed with the single removed or shorter bed with single in place. It really depends how much you want an extra seat. I only mentioned as you commented about losing seats.

U-shape is the likely arrangement we’ll end up with. My plan is to have the units full length behind the driver then have a removable box on the passenger side to enable fitting of two single seats.

I did wonder if European LHD Kombi’s have the orientation of the single / double seat reversed? If yes a European double could work albeit twice as heavy to lift out!

The final detail TBC is height of unit immediately behind the driver. We’re not having a sink / cooker / fridge unit / pop top so might keep it low / short.

Would you post up some pics of your T6 build? If DIYing, can we have some mid build?

(You know we all like a build thread to inspire us!!)

Ha sure, I have some from the T4 build, I'll post those later. Currently running the electrics in the T6 for the Bluetti power station. Then the new flooring to go down, then will get around to building the furniture, so will be a few weeks.

We've had U-shaped layout for over 5 years now. It's great for 2 travellers. There's loads of storage space and we can drop the table in and eat around the table while being able to take in the surrounding views. If you're ever over Holmfirth way you are welcome to have a look, otherwise stick your nose in at Northern Rose in Sherburn in Elmet and have a look at their layout.

Total selfbuild. Bought sheets of lightweight furniture ply and trims etc from Morland and built all the cabinets/beds from scratch. Had upholstery made by Andersons upholstery at Newton Aycliffe. It actually worked out cheaper than buying some generic units and upholstery from a supplier. It was time consuming but we got exactly what we wanted.

Can I ask where you had the seat covers done for the bed?

We have installed an L shape layout in our T6 van and maintained some cupboards along one side. Makes a great slatted double bed and really pleased with the layout.
