Optical complaints on the leather steering wheels

Technical background
Optical damage on the steering wheel, as shown on the following illustrations, is no fault in the sense of
warranty. Investigations have shown that they are not defects in material or workmanship.
• The most frequent complaints are mechanical impacts through jewellery (illustration 1), such as rings, with
which the leather gets damaged or badly worn.

• When getting in and out of the car belts, buckles or zips of clothes can also damage the leather steering
wheel (illustration 2).

• Passing on objects from the passenger seat such as bags can in unfavourable cases also knock against and
damage the steering wheel. Optical examples: chatter marks, cuts or pressure points (see illustrations 3 –
5).

• In most cases, this damage goes unnoticed at the time and later a material defect is suspected.
