Service info: rattle from front end/engine compartment at start-stop Transaction No.: 2047953/1
Release date: 06-Jun-2017
Customer statement / workshop findings
Customer statement:
• Rattling noises from the front end/engine compartment when the engine is started with the start/stop system.
or
• Rattling noises from the front end/engine compartment when the engine is turned off with the start/stop
system.
Workshop findings:
• One or both customer statements can be reproduced.
Technical background
The noises when the engine is started or turned off are caused by the centrifugal pendulum absorbers of the
dual-mass flywheel. When reaching the idle speed the noises do not occur any more. The centrifugal pendulum absorbers reduce the vibrations of the dual-mass flywheel to a straight-line rotation in the lower rev range. This lowers the wear on the gear wheels in the gearbox. The noises are construction-related and normal. There is no parts damage. Explain the background to the customer.
A replacement does not fix the problem - a groundless replacement under warranty will be redebited.
