Tein Spring Silencers

After having lowered my van by 40mm using Type 1 H&R springs, I noticed that I was getting a little bit of knocking from the rear when going over some bumps.

I opted for the lighter duty springs ,as my van is empty 95% of the time, which give a lovely ride, but does mean I get occasional, 'coil slap'.

After a bit of research, I came across the Tein silencer sleeves and ordered a couple of sets. (and noticed similar type sleeves fitted to other manufacturers spring kits).

This evening I put the van up on jacks and set about fitting the sleeves.

You can see from the photos where the coils have been touching, and, after cleaning, this is where I put the sleeves.

I warmed the springs up first with a heat gun, as well as the sleeve, as the sleeve has a line of sticky stuff on the inside it, which im sure, will bond better if warm.

I bought the LARGE set of sleeves, and one on each spring covered the areas that had been contacting.

I also put a cable tie on the ends just for good measure, however, the pre-installed glue got a pretty good hold.

It is easily possible to fit these sleeves while they are fitted to the van, but I wanted to do a thorough job so removed them.

Its a cheap and simple solution to stop suspension knocks on an otherwise, very comfortable set of springs.

Nice, I wonder how long they will last before they wear through?

The three coils that are touching are designed to rest on each other when the car s weight is on the spring , its a dual rate spring and the section that goes coil bound is there to stop the spring coming lose when the car is off the ground , and doesnt do anything in normal driving conditions . , I fear that the cable ties will eventually wear through but i am puzzles as to the noise , I havent come across the noise before , please let us know how it goes .

I understand this, and perhaps I am getting a little more noise due to how rough and potholed the track is to my house.
These sleeves have 100% cured the problem, and although the Cobra -40 springs that were fitted previously didn't make any noises, they didn't ride as nice or hold the van at a consistent height.

I've just got the same springs but uprated at the back because of the camper conversion and poptop, exactly the same setup as you have with the Konis. The left side, which has less weight due to the kitchen being on the other side makes a noise when it becomes unloaded usually dropping down a kerb. Are these silencers holding up still?

Very interesting, since i had exactly the same set up as yours fitted last year i have had the same knocking NSR. I have changed everything including top and bottom mounts, H&R ARB brackets and bushes, reversed the Koni shockers, padded out the spare wheel with sponge and modified the crappy hinge, as well as various other minor bits and peices, CRS even sent me some slightly longer springs dash 2 i beleive, but no, the knocking is still there. Has your knocking returned or is it still ok?. I have ordered a pack of 90-130mm Teins to see if works for me, fingers crossed

Yes, knocking has gone now as changed the springs for a set of Eibachs. Lowering springs that end up coil bound seem to knock on an empty van.

I am convinced the noise isn’t from the spring or spring mounts. If two different springs have been tried and the noise is still there , I checked the other day we have sold over 500. Sets H and R springs and. The only noises we get are from worn lower spring rubbers

Check lower rubbers I have hundreds in stock if you need some posting over

Just a quick update, this morning i fitted the large Tein spring silencers to my H&R springs to try and resolve the ongoing knock, from the NSR. I fitted them to the middle coil of the top 3 without removing the springs, just jacking up one side at a time. Although these 3 coils are designed to sit tight together, as mentioned in an earlier post by CRS, i decided it was worth a try. Went for a test drive and.....................................Result, Resolved, obviously they will wear in time, how much time remains to be seen, but at least i know that has been the problem all along. Thanks to .50 for his excellent initial post.

I am happy to hear that the noise is gone ( for the time being ) but i am not sure it is the reason you had the noise ??

Over the last 15 years we have fitted hundreds of Transporter springs and never had a problem with the dual rate coils making a noise ,

I hope its right . please keep us in the loop .

Me too, that knocking has been driving me mad. On the plus side i have replaced or modified just about every moving or rubber part at the rear of my van!. Seriously though, the knock was there before i fitted the spring silencers, now its gone, like you say at least until they wear out, but i'll deal with that then, it only takes 10mins to do both sides. Just happy to get a resolve.

Seems NSR is where most get the noise? I have/had similar, I even changed the shocks, which made a slight difference, Put thin packing sponge (squares about 8" square) between each coil that was touching (middle 3 on rears) didnt make any noticable difference, bearing in mind i have nothing in rear (furniture etc) so no weight, but finally eliminated most of it through the rear tailgate catch, adjusting made some difference, receiver is all the way in (towards front of van) and bump stops out their furthest (about 11.5mm of thread showing) (any more and tailgate wont shut properly ) but the biggest difference was just putting a rag over the receiver then slamming the tailgate shut on that. 95% gone once i do that. Must point out that normal driving on main roads was/is ok, its just the uneven normal streets with all the small bumps and potholes that were driving me Nutz, not sure if these receivers are meant to have a coating on them to stop this or its just because tailgates have so much weight/leverage acting on this lock/receiver.
