T6 V5 Regarding Ferry Crossings

Hi, was wondering if anyone has any info on the following.... I’m looking at doing the WAW later on in the year. Now I’ve got a T6 day van and I’ve never changed the V5. Looking at prices for the ferry it’s £100 more expensive to travel in a van rather than a camper. To look at my van you would just think it’s a camper... but will they check my registration and see that it’s classed as a van? Long winded I know but hope you all get what I’m on about!!!
Cheers

I did a ferry crossing earlier this month, they did it all off the vehicle reg and went with the DVLA records to determine what it was classed as.

I did Ireland recently...just selected car/mpv below 2.4m...in fact stennaline gave examples of what falls in to this group and the transporter was listed

The whole system is disjointed tho,

  • Online booking charge you for what you tell them
  • Check-in staff just checks the reg and number of people onboard match what you paid for
  • The lining up staff just put you in to rows based on what you look like!

Yeah I did notice the VW Transporter option on Stenna line... anyway I’ll be booking it Friday whatever it costs. Where did you sale from and too?

Holyhead to Dublin £470 return for 4 adults (dog went free and once we saw the state of the kennels, he stayed in the van!!) It was cheaper than Irish ferry's at the time...with the reassurance they listed 'transporter' in the vehicle group. We also picked sociable times to sail...could have saved a few quid traveling at night but was happy to pay more for the convenience

This may be a silly question but I was looking at cross Chanel ferries and does everyone put there T6 as a van or as a car. it says van up to 4m tall and 6m in length and car up to 2.2m tall and 6m in length. so basically it fits both by size but the van option costs 50 pounds more.

If it's a Shuttle or Caravelle I guess you could get away with the 'Car' option (basically listed as M1 on the V5C).

Otherwise might depend on what they feel like when you roll up?

Our van ( Bilbos Celex) goes as a car - and ( certainly with Brittany ferries) you need to input the registration number which then pops up as a car. Never had a problem.

I travel the Hull/Rotterdam P&O ferries route and booked as a car because the dimensions fit and I use it as one. I was questioned at the check-in kiosk, and explained it was converted (although I don’t have windows in it), and was let off, but told not to book it as a car next time.
A few months later and I had trouble booking a ticket. The system seemed to fail as soon as I logged in. After much experimentation I discovered that I could book in as a van or as a motorhome, but not as a car (even before putting the registration in). So I’m assuming that they have a way to tag someone’s details to limit their options - it certainly seemed like that at the time!
I’ve got to make another booking soon for a November crossing, so we’ll see how I get on then.
Booking as a motorhome was cheaper than as a van, but still more than a car.

We always use DFDS & it goes on as a small motorhome. Cheaper than a van which is charged at commercial rates.

We use DFDS Newhaven to Dieppe and book as large car. Never had a problem.
Last time we booked at the ticket office at Dieppe and we told the ticket lady what the vehicle was and she booked us as a large car. So I’m sticking with that.

How did you get in with your last crossing, I am just about to book this crossing, as a large car, then found this post… our “vehicle” is a swb t6 camper, looks like a kombi with a pop top and tailgate bike rack,
The only other P&O option is van or motorhome 7m
I’ve just got a quote from dfds 2 adults and +van Newcastle to Amsterdam £930 booked as a small motorhome,
P&O large car is £700

I booked as a small motorhome (under 7m) which my SWB T6 with a towbar mounted bicycle carrier was comfortably under. I was away for a month, but it was low season (mid November to mid December) and the ferry alone was £185.40 each way (Hull to Rotterdam), which included a cabin. I was asked if it was a camper (I have no windows in the side, but do have some graphics), but there was no problem.

Mine is registered "disabled." They'd probably expect me to turn up on one of those electric mobility scooters.
