Advice regarding rust please!

If it's from a dealer itll come with a warranty that can be redeemed at most garages. Worst case scenario is you pay the local garage to do the repair and claim off the warranty underwriter yourself.

If its private it doesnt matter where you buy it. The moment you hand over the shekels you're on your own.

Either way, distance isnt really an impediment.
I’ve heard about that but a lot of dealers I’ve come across seem to only use local garages making your warranty void. Regardless of distance it’s still the best van I’ve found that isn’t a private sale which I can’t do

only you can make that decision most people would walk and find another. Most people on here love there vans and spend silly amounts of money on making them look pretty.
Most dealers or garages will buy the cheapest vans they can and build on from there turning into campers etc. I wouldn’t rush personally you need a decent base van and build from there

Unloved, find one that is (at a different vendor).
Looks like somebody has been cutting steel to length with an angle grinder!
Would the dealer do a thorough job in these circumstances? Unlikely I’d say if they put it on the market in this state in the first place.
Think it must have been a dodgy seal?
They are very reputable and I think it must be reflected in the price but are still willing to fully repair it

I had a look online at WK18TMO, it looks very clean apart from the load bay.
Paint wise it looks like a brand new van, it also had a lapse in MOTs like it was off the road.
Latest MOT 29 Sept 2025 (70650 miles), previous MOT 21 March 2023 (63887 miles). You may want to ask or get a paid service to see if was in an accident or what the reason was for the delay in the MOT.
MOT history is a string of advisories on tyres and brakes which may highlight issues with maintenance. Make sure it has service history without gaps.
The van is showing as Reserved so looks like somebody has put a deposit down.
It’s about 20 min’s from my home but I’ve never been there before.

Thats not the case.

When we say "warranty", anything more than 3 years old is technically a mechanical breakdown insurance policy, not a warranty as the law defines it. There are half a dozen large underwriters and most garages of any size will have an account with some or all of them.

These policies are owned and run by underwriters, not by selling garages. Leaving statutory rights aside, your policy is with the uneerwiter and not the garage.

Again, provided a garage or "suitably qualified engineer" completes the servicing as required by the manufacturer it can be done anywhere and the policy will remain valid if a claim is ever required.

Thanks yeh they just did the MOT. It was off the road for a while because the clutch broke. I’ve seen the full service history and the work that was done. Not ideal being off the road I know and probably is why it’s rusted. I confess that I reserved it after much deliberation and searching I was happy with it for the price but my partner is now wanting more opinions.

I think it must have been re-sprayed for a 2018 white van to be in that good condition. The outside paint doesn’t match up with the load bay condition.
It looks like it was a working van that has had a re-spray for what ever reason.
You can do a check online for £5 to check if has been in a serious accident.
If you go to visit I would find somebody who knows a thing or two about car body repairs and can spot repaired accident damage.

It had a HPI check if that’s what it’s called but I can check again, thanks for pointing that out. Wouldn’t they have fixed the rust though if that happened?
I already did view it hence why I reserved it. Not an expert but know the basic things to ask/check. Partner can double check it if I decide to go ahead with it

Also I found out the company who owned it, it’s a oil/heating company in Cornwall

No harm in contacting them and getting as much info as you can.
Odd that a commercial company would leave an asset idle for so long with something as simple as a defective clutch.

It’s clear on the online checks 👍

If you have access to Carista or similar you can plug in and check for fault codes before and after a test drive.
Carista has a live data function so you can check a few things while driving.
DPF condition is also worth checking.

Yeh may well do that then. I guess if they are just busy and keep putting it off?

At the end of the day only you can decide if you want to take the risk. Personally I would walk away from it and it appears so would most people on this forum. What are you planning to do with the van? Do you have a budget for repairs/conversion.

@Beth4444 did you find out anymore history with the van?
Kind of, I’ve been on holiday, we are going to see it this weekend. They treated the rust and painted it, looks good from photos. The main thing is finding out the real reason it was off the road. Even spoke to the company that had it (and were apparently the only owner) and they don’t remember it being off the road in their care, they just gave it back to the vw dealership I think.
