T6.1 EPS rack doesn't need to be connected to the CAN-BUS to be wakened up.

Is it possible to use an 2QD Electric Power Steering Unit? The 2QD has PQ compatibility, but some say the motor (mounted on the column near the steering wheel) is not powerful enough to take on a T6. Is that true?

The 2Q1 system is fully capable of handling electric power steering for a Transporter. While I haven't personally tested the 2QD variant, I expect the Chinese equivalent to function similarly. That said, once installed, the main EPS unit sits so close to the pedals that it is highly unlikely to pass a European roadworthiness inspection.
