Got mine yesterday (didn't get an email) it just comes up on the screen when it wants to, don't think you can initiate it in any way.

Are you saying the update happened automatically?
Yes, with the option to download or cancel.
I think it took around an hour to download then next time I switched it on it said ready to install and that it would take around ten minutes, and not to drive while it was doing it (SOS would be unavailable or something like that).
I said yes to install, haven't driven it since.
So, I got a replacement battery, installed it and have been driving it for a few days now, but the SOS message still there, and the Carista still shows same two faults. Resetting them removes them, but then they come back again as soon as ignition is turned on.
I checked the original battery and it is fully charged and showing no issues, so it looks like the battery was not at fault. But still the van thinks it is.

Seems some people have had successful fixes with a new (and very cheap) battery box part no: 5WA998058C

Did it come with a new little box as above? Or just the actual battery?

this would not fit in the t6.1. The battery is in a specific box which clips on to a metal support behind the clocks. Also clipped to this box is another unit which I suspect is the sos module itself.
The part you have is not even remotely like what would be needed to replace the box and house the battery and sos unit.
I did briefly for one journey of about 10 minutes have no error on startup or when driving. But the journey home 1/2hr later the error came back as soon as I turned on the ignition. I do not believe the issue is now the battery. I suspect it needs the telemtrics unit sos battery history erasing. But my carista cannot do that. I think it needs ODB11.
When you say resetting, do you mean erasing the faults in 0075 control unit?
Yes, apparently just resetting the faults in carista doesn’t work. ODB11 on the other hand has when you look at 0075 unit an option to erase all sos battery history. This has worked for most people when replacing the battery as it forces the unit to recalibrate.
The issue seems to be as I understand it that the unit doesn’t recognise or recalibrate when you change the battery alone due to bad software. But clearing the battery history forces the issue. Then you can clear the fault codes and they won’t come straight back. This is what I have read from other threads.
Quick update. It looks like I finally have it sorted. I replaced the battery but the fault remained. But used odb11 to reset the sos battery history then cleared the faults and they have not returned as yet.
I am convinced my original battery was OK as I tested it and cycle charged it I have a very reliable battery charger I use for my model aircraft. But at this point I’m not going to upset the van by putting it back in.
Fingers crossed that is the last of it for a while at least.

Very interested to know, as the authorised VW workshop nearest me don't seem that interested, or concerned by it, at the moment??
Since using ODB11 to reset the sos battery history the fault has not returned. It is clear that if the battery is faulty then replacing it will only work if the history is reset.
I expect in my case that the battery wasn’t faulty and as discussed in other threads, it just stopped checking it properly and needed the history reset to get the software working again.
I would suggest if you have the fault resetting the history before sourcing a battery to see if the cause is just a software fault.
I found this thread useful for resolving my issue without a costly visit to VW

Since collecting our 08/2021 T6.1 Combi, VCDS has highlighted code B1916 F2, eCall Battery Used Up.
This was a false positive as VCDS was indicating a battery charge level of 94%.
I suspect that the van had been laid up for some weeks prior to sale and the eCall / Telematics battery had dipped below a certain threshold.
I left the code, to see if it would clear itself - which it has not.
A week ago, the boss commented 'that feckin PoS has another fault on the screen'
To be fair, she was correct - an historic fault on a healthy eCall battery had now morphed into something...

I haven't been able to take pictures of the screen. On my September 2020 T6.1 Premium, the SOS function failed in January after a main battery replacement. After trying to replace the SOS module battery and still experiencing the same problem, it was finally fixed this Sunday with a general system update.
Also had the annoying SOS error. I think as others have said. In many cases the battery is actually ok but has an expiry date.
My battery condition says “normal” with charge level “92%”
I just reset the battery history and cleared the fault so far so good.
