T6.1 Heated mirror not Timing out !

T6 Highline. Mirror heaters stay on as long as the switch is set.

I am usually in the van with Mrs CAB.

I always ask her to set a timer on her phone.

I really don't get why the mirrors dont time out. The only reason I can possible imagine is to keep them dry from road spray and condensation in cold humid conditions.

Just a thought if you set the switch to heat (turn heating on) then move the switch to another position, does the timer come into effect? I wonder if they stay on with the switch in the heat position because it's not a momentary switch🤔
If I have the chance, i'll give it a go.

Just proven my rather hopeful thought as negative:( It does seem that the mirrors are either on or off with the switch used VCDS advance measuring to see state of switch and heating.

I tested mine yesterday. 20 mins and still on. So turned them off with the switch at that point.

Yeah, only on with the switch.
I also checkied in the manual - and it actually says to remember to turn it off, which also confirms what we have thought.
As an aside, I had a BMW with auto heater mirrors, and the mirror glass fell out after a number of years - I assumes it was from the mirror heaters slowly breaking down the glue that held them in place. Maybe soemthing to be aware of.

If it’s that important not to leave them on surely it means they should be on a timer from factory? Having said that non of the vag group cars I have owned had a timer.
Also has me wondering what the 600s is all about.

Probably wishful thinking but perhaps you could try some small number, e.g. 5, just to see if there is a mixup with the unit - e.g. minutes vs. seconds. After all, the VCDS is a third-party tool.

There is actually an "s" after the 600 (600s) which suggests seconds? I also wondered if the timer would be more relevant if there is a rear screen heater in the van (which I don't have). It may well be worth trying a much lower value, I might try next week if time/work allows.

I have a rear (and front) screen heater. Mirror heat stays on as long as switched to on on mine. Doesn't appear to be linked to rear screen heater in any way as far as I can tell.

I think I found a way to time out the mirror using a little Arduino to run an external timer and a tone generator.
this will shut the power to the mirror after 10 minutes and will also play a small beep at the beginning of the heat cycle,
so that I know the switch was left in the ON position by accident. If I succeed I will share the full details with you lovely folks.

large Green Led: will be the control output for the heater, via a small relay ( in the picture below, you can see it is OFF after 10 minutes)

I could be talking bollocks, but I think my mirror heaters may be linked to my rear window heater somehow.
If I turn the mirror heaters on it shows up on the power usage monitor as an item, but the power meter does not increase. However if the rear window heater is on, and then turn the mirror heater on the power monitor does increase for each.

Unfortunately is is too hot for frosts so cannot test any further. I may look at the vcds config to see if I can spot anythingthat can be changed.

Finally I mange to find some time to finish the two things that was bothering me since I got this Van, one was the Steering wheel heater ( which I finished and posted the details under the T6.1 Steering heater retro fit). T6.1 Heated Steering-Wheel retrofit?
So since, I managed to finish the mirror heater timer as well. Here are the steps I did to get this to work, hope this is any good to some one who wants to do this. Possibly a solution for a problem that doesn't bother many 🙂.

  • Identified the cable leaving the BCM to the two mirrors, then cut it and extended the cable ( not easy to solder where it is at!! )
  • Built an external single loop timer (using a small micro controller) which will activate 3 seconds after the supply from the BCM (this will extend the life of the BCM PCB relay contacts)
  • Timer will activate with an audible tone, to confirm the mirror heater is active (this tone will be prompting you to switch Off the heater if not needed) timer will run for 6 minutes and then it will sound a different tone to remind you that the mirror heater has timed out. if you need to extent the heat you can switch OFF and On for another 6 min cycle.
here are some pictures I took, whilst I was doing this.
