Stop start not working after being at dealership

Ok so this video shows the car stopped at a junction. Stop start says it is not working, yet the engine has stopped and the steering wheel is at 90 degrees.

There is a red warning light on the dash - is it about seat belt being off?

Yes it is. I took my seatbelt off as I was actually pulled up on my drive way and needed to grab my phone but the engine had already stopped and the stop start symbol was also already showing as not operating. The seatbelt symbol although well spotted is a red herring here.

Worth noting - while i do not know how to use VCDS those codes all point to electronic low voltage. I saw motability being mentioned - is your bus converted for a wheelchair access at rear? The fact he rear latch is malfunctioning kind of says to me there may be a parasitic drain from somethign to do with the modifications at the rear (assuming we are talking wheelchair bus here..) - I have an executive Velle and if it hadnt been for me pressing the button of doom (start stop) everytime i start up (i live rurally...) fellows i have spoken to say the the genuine battery goes kaput after 4/5 yers (oh, i wonder what is that long... AH! yes! WARRANTY!)
I digress.
Battery health might be fine. But if its being drained constantly by an adaption shorting or malfucntioning, erm, it wont stop/start.
Whyd i bring my velle into this? Theres. so. many.things that consume the power my alternator makes - the acess gets dumped into the battery. I have done massive journeys (150 miles or so) - stop start wont turn on and off. Because I've the setreo on. loud. fans working overtime coz its 30 outside. charging stuff. My Fridge is on. The Sat nav is on. The cd player is on. My lights might also be on.
I digress again. I've had a glass of wine.
Its that rear latch that just makes me think that is your cuplrit. or somethign to do with an adaption just parasitically draining your battery.
If you have no major mtoreised adaptions then... my words mean nothing. My cynical side - why worry about it not working? haha! - but if its in warranty, and you are in need of the bus to function due to disability, then i get it - you dont want ANYTHING to be wrong in case it goes wrong at that critical moment. Which is wholly understandable.

I just disticntly remember one of the taxi drivers i knew as a teenager who did the rounds for phycially immobile kids to get to school having a similar issue once - was the lift nechanism just chewing his battery every night from a short or something omething wrong with the lift motor... Mightve been the rear latch as it was repostioned due to the lift mechanism and the altered rear end

Good luck

You could get ECU's opinion by doing a logging session as described in post #50 (based onn posts #39 and #41).

Worth noting that not even such a journey doesn't fully charge a drained battery. It's battery's charge acceptance which limits charging - there is no way to force battery to accept more charge. Typically a drained battery needs about 10 hours to get at 80% level. The 20 hours chargers do is top up the battery as for the last 20% the charge acceptance rate is already quite low.

As was noted on VCDS forum you need to pay attention for detected battery drain while parked.

Quite possibly there is a battery drain issue which the van doesn't like. Below snippets from the scan in

Scanned on

Mileage: 64042km-39793mi

Quiescent current has exceeded the set limit pretty much every day - 33 times sincw March 21st. So what happened on March 20-21 as possibly the fault register was cleared then? Also during that period the accumulated mileage was fairly low (1120 km = perhaps only 20 running hours) thus quite possibly the battery couldn't catch up with everyday drain. At the first incident voltage was only 12.0 V ignition OFF. Also worth noting the fault counter is stepped up only once per "sleeping session".

Thank you @mmi for all of you useful help and continued support with this.

21st of March was when the van went back to the dealers the first time to investigate the problem. You can be almost certain they cleared any codes to try and hide something.

The everyday drain should not have been an issue because I was using the van to add miles onto it and my wife went to work via alternative means (a real pain in the bum but something we wanted to try to eliminate the use of the lift). Whilst I was driving the van the rear lift was not used, I had no aircon and not even the radio (that was sooooo boring).

The van is being inspected next week by DEKRA as Motability are not happy with the situation and that it has been left not fully operational. I will add some updates after that as hopefully the engineer in attendance will have some ideas.

That's quite ironic considering Motability's no own propensity to cut maintenance corners when they think they can get away with it.

Really, we have never come across my issues around maintenance. Have you got any examples as you have me REALLY worried now.

I know doubly - as my Sister being a Motability customer, and my Brother-in-Law that owns his own garage and MOT station with whom Motability have an account.

I wouldn't worry unduly as a customer - albeit keep your eyes peeled - but with what I've heard I'm not daft enough to think Motability vehicles are the super-well maintained safe used buy that some people think they are.

Would love to hear what you say off the record and not on a public forum.

Ours may be well maintained as my wife and I are mechanically minded (we used to run classic Beetles for pity’s sake before life happened) and we plan ahead for routine maintenance as we go out of our way to find out what should be done and at what mileage and after what amount of time. Also if we see an issue we get it looked at rather than ignore like many motability customers that I know do.

I can give you a taster...

My sister had a puncture on her Tucson. Unrepairable, but MB would only pay for the cheapest tyres so she ended up with three nice Hankook summer tyres and a single Maxis M+S tyre on the rear. This left it feeling vague and unsettled at speed, quite unnerving on the motorway. I tried it and she wasn't imagining it, so she threw her teddies and told them they could take the car away. They relented, fitted a tyre of a similar type and the problem went away.

I won't mention where BiL's garage is but he confirms they're skinflints. A favourite is that when a car requires a major service it's usually 2 years in to a 3 year lease and MB will typically only pay for an oil and filter change. MB won't pay for 'sundries', items too small to bill separately, so hinges, locks check straps etc don't get lubed.

All the big lease companies are the same, but the idea that MB somehow maintain their vehicles within an inch of their lives is laughable.

DEKRA came out to do an inspection this week. They scanned the codes, asked me if it has ever had a flat battery, I confirmed it has never had a flat battery. They then asked when the vehicle was last in the dealers and the mileage and dates tie up with that visit for the codes last being cleared. He did a battery test and a crank test.

The battery test results came back (before the crank test) as 44%. He basically said the battery has had it. Funny that the dealership tested it twice and said it was fine, I saw the DEKRA results with my own eyes so I don’t believe the dealership. VW customer services currently have an open ticket regarding this battery as they confirmed it was a fault that we reported before the warranty on it expired. Yes the battery is included in the initial 3 year warranty.

Hope you finally have a positive outcome.
I initially typed satisfactory, but then thought better of it.
You’ve been messed around for far too long for just a replacement batteryto be satisfactory.
I hope suitable recompense gets sorted, and soon.

Recompense :slow rofl: :slow rofl:

This is motability and VW Commercial. If we actually get a new battery that will be a shocker in itself. Because the car is essentially functional (apart from stop start) I imagine they will leave us to run until the car eventually breaks down or fails to start.

But I appreciate everyone’s support and suggestions through out. I will let you know later this week when Motability have called us.
