VW Dealerships - personal experience

My Dad's first job was at a Morris dealer, tidying up and disguising the rust on new cars before they went out to customers.
My unofficial weekend job was filling the rust holes on the front wings of my dad's 2 year old Lancia, which I persuaded him to buy instead of a Maxi or Princess to replace his Austin 1800 Mk11 (which replaced his 1800 Mk1, which replaced his Cambridge....) It was my penance!

My grandad was UK works manager for Lancia. The wheel on one of his company Betas rusted so badly inside a year the rim had sheared off the centre section and went for a jolly on its own.

FIAT has sold a factory to the Soviets and accepted a large shipment of steel as part payment. Sadly it was not the best quality material!

Shame, because the Beta was otherwise an excellent car and later on in production the problem was resolved, but rhe reputational damage was done.

Fortunately Grandpappy's Stratos and Flaminia suffered no such problem.

We digress....
My dad (and subsequently I, when he got fed up with it and foisted it on me once I got my licence) carried a spare throttle linkage (small plastic part) in the glove box, because it snapped so frequently.
Apart from the dreadful driving position (long arms / short legs), terrible gear change, the snapping throttle linkage and of course the rust, the Beta was a lovely car!

Yeah, big no not from me too. Nothing against it in general but I have this fear that it will come back with loads of swirl marks and scratches. Being a black van it would be quite noticeable.
And your fears would more than likely be correct. @GUMY might be ok as they didn’t wash his wheels as I suspect they would of used the same cloth/sponge to then clean the paintwork👎

Ha, yeah most likely. They washed it the last time it was in. I was gutted. It needed it though as it as it had a load of winter grime over it but I couldn't wait to check over it in the daylight.

I deliberately booked mine in on a Saturday as was told that they don’t wash vehicles on the weekend. Suits me perfect, as the message about not washing doesn’t always reach the guys who do the washing. If they’re not even there on the day, then the risk is void.

All of these ‘reviews’ are worthless if the dealership isn’t named.
Naturally, which is why I clearly identified mine (Liverpool). As for the "wash", I'm pretty sure no sponge or cloth came anywhere near the van, but it was certainly cleaner than when I dropped it off after the run down the M57 in the rain. Close inspection revealed no scratches, smears or damage of any kind. Again, no more or less than expected.
I'll be happy to return there in 2 years / 18,000 miles to buy another virtual stamp for the service history.

Need some more for:-
Don’t dent
Don’t scratch
Don’t borrow to go home for lunch
Don’t borrow to take stuff to the dump
Actually just don’t borrow it at all :)
Don’t take my change
Don’t eat my sweets
Don’t disconnect my dash cam
Don’t smoke in it
Why are you smoking at work anyway?
And most importantly don’t do that thing that I can’t even think of right now that is undoubtedly going to cause me alarm and distress…!

Is this still about VW dealerships, or just garages in general?
My previous vehicle was serviced at local independents. One of them lost the service book with its full history from new - it was only returned after I insisted that he rang every other client from that day, and sure enough, he'd put it in somebody else's car. The next garage I tried passed the MoT but with an advisory for the FNS shock absorber (leaking oil). Took it back to him a week later to get it changed, and when I got home and had a peak, discovered he'd changed the FOS instead. When I returned, he still had the (passable) shocker that he'd removed, so he put that on the NS. Needless to say, the following year there was an advisory for the FNS again - which of course made the history look as if I hadn't bothered fixing it first time round - not a great sign for potential buyers looking to see how much care you've taken of your vehicle.
Having invested a king's ransom in buying the van new, I'm happy to pay for a VW service history, at least while it's under warranty. It may cost a bit more than an independent, but I consider it just part of looking after my investment. I know when I was looking at 2-3 year old vans for sale, a van with VW FSH would have swayed me over one without.
Oh, and did I mention, VW Van centre Liverpool supply unlimited free hot drinks, WiFi, clean toilets, & comfortable seating areas? A very different experience to my local independents!

It really is each to there own when comes to these things. full main dealer or full service history would make no difference to me at all as long as it was a good full history.
I’m not personally saying all main dealers are bad but my personal experience from my main dealer was not the best.
I’ve always had rotten luck with motors in the past and same luck with garages also always feeling like I’ve been done over in one way or another.
I’m now on my 7th VW and touch wood my luck or misfortune with motors seems to have took a turn hence why I’m a big VW fan.
My local independent specialists who have looked after my VWs for the last 10 years may not have WiFi or comfy seating areas but I trust them to do a decent job. They ring me with updates and costs and generally make me feel at ease knowing my cars in good hands. 👍
