starter activation time

Hi all,
Bit of an issue that I would like to address before it becomes a non starter! (2021 T6.1 5)
ok so issue is after getting in van turning on ignition and cranking, the time the starter takes to start cranking seems to be getting longer and longer,
usually around a second to start cranking now around 3 seconds, is this an issue or normal?

I believe (but I'm happy to be corrected) that if you turn the key to ignition on, but then immediately turn it the next stage to start, the van won't try to start until the glow plugs have heated up sufficiently. Mine takes about 1-2 seconds when starting from cold in the morning.
I wonder if your battery, which might be the original one so 5 years old now, isn't providing as much current as it did when new and so the glow plugs need an extra period of time before starting is enabled?
I'm no expert so let's wait and see what others say, but you can get a free battery test at lots of garages or Halfords.

Thanks for reply, I have upgraded battery to a 95ah bosch over a 75ah Varta which died so I would think the battery is not the issue though I have not checked for glow plug light if im honest, I will check that in the morning, thanks.
 
Glow plug delay...

Was the new battery coded in?

Does the stop/start work correctly?

Does the temp sensor work correctly?

Is there anything wired to the starter battery NEG terminal?
 
Put. The van on change for 24hrs, and retest .

So its that time of year again, cold, rainy. . . . . . . flat battery =[


This time we look at Battery Chargers.

Our vans will most likely come with a AGM style starter battery, for this type of battery we need a "Smart Charger" . . . . but what does this mean?

well, chargers of old were of the constant voltage constant current type affair.


They would put out 13.8v at say 5amps and that was it . . . . . . . .


Modern AGM batteries need a much smarter way of being charged properly.

Mine ('24 plate) takes a couple of seconds before it'll start from cold. Had it a year now, seems normal, just needs a couple of seconds for all the systems to boot up I guess.

Does it have the same delay when the engines up to temperature?

My T6 will have a second or two delay from cold, but when up to temperature the starter motor will kick in pretty much as soon as the keys turned.

Don't forget these vans are all fly by wire so the starter isn't connected to the key it's controlled by a module and the key is just an input to the module.
 
will get battery coded in asap! do we know if it can be done with an autel or will I need to dig out and fire up vcds?
I work with BMW so all my kit is bmw related but my autel has other models inc. not a vag man by any means.

I don't think it does (have the same delay) will have to check.

I only just figured I don't have to hold the key in start position while it starts ... as you say, fly by wire the key turn sends the signal to the computer and it'll start when it's ready.

no idea about autel. so id dig out vcds as its dead easy.

Autel should do it just fine, our launch at work does it no problem and they pretty much use the same softwares

Yeah, capacity and battery type can be changed. However, all the options aren't available via the generic battery service function menu. So if you needed to change the battery type, then you'll need to go into the vw software and into the relevant control module.

The fact you only need to change the AH, then just go straight into the battery menu and you'll be all good.
