Show Us Your Road Bikes

Wahoo Kickr and Zwift for me. Might be back to commuting with the lighter morning and evenings.

Is anyone else managing to get out on their bikes for their permitted exercise during lockdown?
I have just been out with my lad, me on my road bike, him on my mountain bike (awaiting parts to get his fixed), a nice 41.5 miles. Glorious afternoon, staying on reasonably countryside style roads. Made even nicer by virtue of their being next to no cars about.
Hell of a lot of other folks out on bikes though.

I am. Due to working from home and getting loads done in the mornings, afternoons are for cycling. No big rides, just out everyday totting up around 250 miles a week.

@Pete C How do you get on with those Prime wheels? I've just been offered a set of mint 50mm's as a swap for a set of wheels I'm unlikely to use.

Seem fine to me. Haven’t done massive miles on them but no issues.
They are light, and spin up quickly, but are affected by crosswinds.
They came with the correct brake blocks and spare spokes, so see if you can get those with the wheels too.
I have found that the GP4000sII tyres are a bloody tight fit to put on or get off.

I shall be putting my favoured tubeless Hutchinsons on them and have SwissStop carbon blocks in stock.

There are some nice bikes on here, so I thought I'll add a couple of mine.

Is anyone into retro mountain bikes? I started collecting them a few years back but have since sold a few, only keeping the really good ones. Klein, Pace, Yeti etc.

Specialized Tarmac for me. The biggest benefit of the lockdown has been the chance to get out for a daily ride either on my own or with my wife and kids, I could never normally do that.

My photos always rotate when uploading to the forum, I have no idea why!

What’s the thoughts regarding disk brakes versus rim brakes on a road bike?
My road bikes have always had rim brakes and my mountain bikes have always had disk brakes, however over the past couple of years most manufacturers of road bikes have offered the option of either.
Am considering building myself a new road bike, buying each part separately, and just interested in people’s thoughts, especially as I note that @Broadside ‘s specialised above has disks.
@Deaky as I know you are mad into your bikes, what do you ride with?
Looking at a bare Pinarello Dogma 60.1 frame at the mo and can’t quite decide whether to push the button or not.

In my opinion:

Rim brakes are fine on road bikes that are mainly summer use (got 3 of those :) ).
Discs for anything else ie on my winter road bike, cross bike and mountain bike.
Winter road bike and mountain bike are full hydraulic. Cross bike is hybrid ie cabled levers pulling hydraulic calipers.

I recommend hydraulic discs. I have both rim and disc road bikes and discs win every time. Rim brakes are OK, they do the job and have done for years, but much more feel and control with discs, especially hydraulic.

You don’t really NEED discs, but we don’t really NEED carbon frames/wheels, electronic groupsets etc, but they’re nice to have!

My next dream bike build will be discs, but it may remain just a dream for some time!

I agree there is definitely more feel on a disk, but I just seem to have had so many issues with them on the MTB's I've had them on, always leaking, or squealing, or something else that just means they don't quite bite as well I would like them to.
Was looking at the Shimano Ultegra DI2 full groupset, and it was only that this is now offered in a disk and rim option that got me wondering.

I’ve got disc brakes on my newer summer bike and rim brakes on my older winter bike. Definitely the wrong way round but when getting the newer bike I wanted the disks that I’m now used to as I have them on my hybrid and the rim brakes can be quite scary when it turns wet and all of a sudden it feels like there’s no brakes!

I will always go for disk and hydraulic disks given the option

discs or disks?

I have disk brakes on my winter bike and rim brakes on my best bike. My wheels are Mavic Cosmic Exaliths, they have a sort of serrated braking surface. The modulation and stopping power in wet or dry conditions is great. There’s just something right about a road bike with rim brakes

@DaveyB i went for discs on this bike because I ride it year round in all weathers with carbon rims. With discs you can have your carbon cake and eat it, I couldn’t otherwise consider running carbon rims all through winter.

I never got in to trouble with rim brakes, this is my first road bike with discs but the revelation in riding big descents in the wet and being able to stop quickly has been brilliant, and they stop so easily which leads to less achey hands on a hilly ride.

They get my vote but you can tell that from the bike I bought!!!

I will add that I always preferred the look of rim brakes but it is all going towards discs now. I keep my main road bike for about 4 years so it needs to last me a while, I didn’t want to go with rim brakes and think it was outdated in a couple of years time. That’s how I sold it to myself anyway....
