Sat Nav Update

The card was visible until I tried to erase the contents. I have just double checked, in case that was causing me the original problems, and the error message said "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
You have lost me, so you have the SD card, it is unlocked, you put into Mac then go to disc utility. Now on the left hand side of the pop up box can you see the card - it will probably be the last item on the tree

Just a comment. I think that formatting the SD card is overkill (without a good reason). It's just unnecessary "risk" to restructure working SD card by formatting. Just delete the "maps" directory in the root and it clears the space for update.

Hi mmi, unfortunately Apple/Mac produces hidden files which are referred to as Dot files. These can and do cause issues on cards. There are plenty of apps available called Dot-cleaner and similar which you can run to clear them but, to be honest, I find it easier to format the card then I know all the pesky hidden files are gone.

It also updates the software that runs the nav
Doesn’t make a huge difference but if for example you are running the older software updating removes the need to put a space in the middle of postcodes so you don’t have to switch screens to get the space then switch back again to numbers

tried it twice now, crashes out @ 82% .... GRRRRR.
That’s extremely annoying, if you read the post on page 1 you will see that Hactus got over this by formatting the card and installing through discovercare as a new card. Worth a go?

Quick update, couldn't make a new card work as the van couldn't find the nav database. So back to the original VW card and disc utility, initiated card and then erased card as discussed earlier, tried to reload the backup without succes so went for the install update and it went straight in. Card back in van and appears to be fully functional with the latest version. I wish I understood quite how and why I succeeded tonight when it would not work any which way yesterday.
Thanks again to all those who tried to help and provided very useful guidance along the way.

Thanks for the feedback Dave, just one thing to mention you say “couldn’t make new card work” if by this you mean you tried a new SD card then it wouldn’t, it will only work with the official VW branded card. Sorry if I have misunderstood but thought worth mentioning.

So I used the Format option within the Windows OS.
First task after removing the card from the van, slide the switch on the side of the card to un-locked. Pop the VW card into the card reader or slot on your PC, my laptop saw this as D:\ Next, right-click the new drive (D:\ in my case) and select Format. Make sure the FAT32 is selected and I then selected Quick Format.
Once this completed I opened the DiscoverCare App and selected the non-VW card option, I de-selected Backup ( figured card was formatted so nothing to backup). The Download was either very quick or DiscoverCare could see the file from a previous attempt but the install to the card took a good 30-45 minutes but could have been longer , I wasn’t watching all the time.

Don’t forget to slide the switch on the side of the card to locked and pop back into the van.

This worked for me but I did need to setup my POI’s again after dropping the card back into the slot.

Don’t forget if you use a non-VW card then it probably needs to be a quick card, something like a Class 10, with at least 16Gb of storage.

If you go above 64Gb then the card probably needs to be Formatted as ExFat rather than FAT32. Not tested this so no idea if the VW unit will read a larger card, the VW card that I have is 16Gb.

Hactus - you can not use a non VW card, it will not work. VW have some very hidden files on their cards to prevent piracy. Only VW supplied cards will accept the SatNav data.

Didn’t realise this. I will edit my post to avoid any confusion in the future. Thanks Nigel W

Thought I’d seen earlier someone say they had used a non verbal card consequently I tried the option, I had one available. Must have misunderstood. Got there in the end.

well that was a load of B@lls . . .

gave up after 4 tries with the software..... and ended-up with a corrupted SD Card that the Discover care didn't even recognize . . . . so totally stuffed.,

in the end had to delete all the files off the card. ...

Then copy over the original files from the DiscoverCare backup folder to get back to where i started. . . .

then deleted those files . . . .

and copied over the newly Downloaded Maps folder that DiscoverCare had downloaded previously . . . (13G zip file, unzipped back to the Maps folder, then copied over to SD card)

Then run the software again to check . . . . . its now saying my SD card is up-to-date.

what a mission. . . . But think we are all sorted.
