Retrofit heated rear window.

Hi. I have a t6 DROPSIDE single cab with a heated rear window fitted. These vans were only fitted with a plain rear window so I guess that was smashed and the only one they could find was one with a heater. I have a dash switch I’ve purchased for a t6 rear heater, but can anyone tell me what I’m going to need to make this work as it’s not plumbed in at all, the wiring in the window tests fine (continuity test), I’m guessing I need some wiring, relay and the plug for the switch? No doubt followed by coding ? Any information would be really helpful. THANKYOU.

Can’t help with your question but might be worth editing your post title to give more details so you get more replies.

Hi all,

I want to add a heated rear window and wiper to the van….

I have factory installed heated seats, so the heater control panel is more expensive on eBay etc. so I purchased a cheap mk6 golf heater controller, and have stripped it down to remove the heated rear window button. I have then stripped my heater control, which looks exactly the same internally and added the switch.

Switch illumination works for the lights, but the led doesn’t illuminate when I press the switch.

Anyone know if my approach will work? And how I code it in VCDS ???

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

AB.

Gave it a go today, byte 15. Seems to work, light illuminates and I can hear the relay latch. So if you want heated rear window you don’t have to change the heater control, just add the button…. Thanks for the input mmi

Picking up a 2018 T6 with tailgate next week. Wanting to fit rear window and looking at fitting one with the heating elements. I'm presuming that there'll be no wires already running from the dash to tailgate?
And I can't find retrofit switches anywhere to replace the blank, only a complete heater control. So my question is can you fit just the switch and have an auto electrician run the wires? Or am I forced into buying a complete new heater control just to obtain the switch? Screenshot 2024-10-06 at 10.46.27.png

Hi matey. The control wiring is CAN and is already at the panel. The blank on your unit is removable, you only need to replace the switch blank for one with the heated screen icon. Yey! You may think, but you can't buy the switch on its own (Booooo!!).
That said it does mean you could try and find a damaged or faulty unit and just pop the switch out.
The same control panel comes in Caddy's and Passats, and some other vag group. I found any advertised for sale as being T6 had a considerable increase in asking price, so look for one from another model to save same money.

I found a caddy one on FB Marketplace for £10 and just took the switch out and replaced the blank on my standsrd unit.

Wiring, you will need to run a 2.5mm wire from the BCM to the tailgate for power and another 2.5mm wire from the ground point tucked in the rear left/nearside D pillar to the tailgate.

Once thats done you will need to alter the coding of the BCM to let it know it now has a heated rear screen. That will activate it and your done.

Thanks so much for the detailed and thorough reply. Really appreciated !

Hi while searching threads for a checklist of jobs for my t6 barn door to tailgate conversion I came across this thread, I can confirm the heated switch part was dead easy, I just bought a 2010 mk6 golf unit off eBay £9.50 !
You can see that behind the blank when you remove it the hardware is already behind it exactly the same as the golf so it pops straight in as Hoopdub said... all of 25 second job...wish the rest of it was that easy !

Which pin on the BCM does the power come from and what pin on the tailgate wiring loom connector does this go to and what pin does the earth go into? Just in the middle of doing this job and cant find this info. Also need to know what additional wires need to be run to get the rear wiper working.
Cheers!

Which pin on the BCM does the power come from
Wiring diagram shows T73b/63
what pin on the tailgate wiring loom connector does this go to
Wiring diagram shows T17o/17 (via T17m/16)

Late again but this may help. I got tired of knocking my laptop so i printed this off to use while installing
I didn't run wires for the wash/wipe system. I removed it all and blanked to hole in the screen.

I’m trying to do the same thing. Does the Heated glass not draw around 25-30Amps? If so wouldn’t the cable need to be thicker than 2.5mm? Or is that just the control/switch cable, therefore the power cable would be thicker and come straight off the van battery to the positive terminal on the tailgate glass? How do you then splice in the control cable?

As per the factory wiring diagrams it is 2.5mm2. You need a red with yellow trace going from fuse SC6 to pin 67 of the white plug on the BCM and a white going from pin 63 of the white plug of the BCM to the tailgate loom pin 17 of connector T17o via T17m in the left hand a pillar under the dash. You will then also need a brown going from pin 16 of the connector T17o down to the earth point in the rear quarter. If you have got the button fitted in the controller for the heated rear screen all you will need to do is put a fuse in position SC6 and then code it all and you should be good to go.

Thanks very much. The BCM, Battery Control Module?? Is this the connection terminals sat on top of the battery? Do you have these wiring diagrams? I can’t access them.

Body Control Module. This is under the dash on the drivers side and can be quite fiddly to access. If you are not used to dealing with these sort of electrics it can be quite daunting pulling it all apart. The wiring diagrams are all available on here if you have VIP membership. If you are planning on doing a fair few mods to your van, it is an invaluable resource. I have added loads of bits to my T6 Startline thanks to this and it now probably rivals some highline spec vans!
