Pink Power Steering Fluid Makes Whining Noise?!

Hello sports fans!

Here I am again with a hopefully not-too-daft question. We've worked through the really problematic issues on the van we bought sex months ago and are now on to the secondary ones.

The 120ps 2017 panel van with CXGB engine we bought has always had an audible whine that goes up and down with RPM and is always present regardless of gears, clutch, movement etc. The clutch and DMF were changed just before we bought it. I had assumed that this was probably a bad aux belt pulley. A mechanic new to us has had a look today and said the cause is that the vehicle has the wrong power steering fluid (pink instead of green): the incorrect viscosity causes the power steering system to whine due to the increased load it's under?

So I wondered if anyone here had had a similar experience? The vehicle is ex fleet so it seems odd that they'd use the wrong fluid. The manual isn't any help.

Any opinions on what will happen if I do nothing for now?

Is it a simple enough 'flush and fill' job if the wrong stuff is in there?

Many thankyooouuuusssss.

PS: Court case is now set for the cost of repairs we had to meet when sold the van in the first place (not serviced, EGR cooler more full of carbon than your HB1 pencil on the fist day of school. Incredibly, the defending garage has uploaded VCDS scans of a different vehicle but with my numberplate, mileage and date added and tried to pass it off as evidence there was nothing wrong with the thing. Should be entertaining - will keep you posted.

If the cap is green (which it will be..) then it should has green power steering fluid anyway.

Like you say, odd that it would have the red stuff in there. But if its had a new rack at some point, then the previous garage may have put any old fluid in there.

We had issues with MK2/3 golf era vehicles if green / red power steering fluid was mixed or used when it shouldn't have been. So maybe don't sack the mechanic just yet.

It’s weird, this vehicle is an ex fleet and so I have full service history… No new racks.

Local garage pulled the engine out in order to make good faults they caused with hydro lock… they said they refilled green fluid in as is proper. Their suggestion is that previous fleet management owner may have used the wrong fluid, and that the green they have subsequently added has been discoloured by residual red. (it seems unlikely that a large organisation managing hundreds of vehicles would use the incorrect fluid.

GF took pictures yesterday…
