In the last 2/3 weeks my 2019 Kombi (CXEB) is showing these faults in Carista. I've cleared them & they come back. One of the faults appears then the other. So far never both faults together.

Previously a few months ago the EGR pipe was changed because it was split but not the cooler part of EGR.

I'm seeing DPF regens about every 150 miles or less & mostly doing long journeys over 1 hour.

Feeling a rumble on idle last few months but I thought this might be the flywheel.

What further troubleshooting steps can I do myself to figure out what's the issue?

P20EE - please verify that engine controller software is up-to-date.
Please post "Detailed ECU info"-report (under Carista Service menu).

P0401 - you could run engine's self diagnostic routine to verfiy the issue

Here's the output from Carista on the engine ECU detailed info:

Van was in VW dealer a few months ago for full service & a bunch of other work including any software updates. If it's still not up to date they didn't do what I paid them to do.

For the self diagnostics bit - I don't have VCDS to run the engine self diagnostics. If I've understood the post you linked to correctly I need VCDS to do that.

Engine Part #: 04L906056KQ Component: R4 2.0l BTD Software version: 3775
VW has updated ECU software 04L906056KQ version 3775 with
Code:
Engine
Part #: 04L997264
Component: R4 2.0l BTD
Software version: 9540
Yes, confusingly in the update also the software identifier "04L906056KQ" was changed to "04L997264" - normally only version number changes.
E.g. in below the new software identifiers can be seen

Well, VW procedure is to do the above-mentioned update only if vehicle suffers e.g. repetitive P20EE fault (active=emission light on).

Another CXEB engine (DSG+4Motion) software update is explained and measured here:

If I've understood the post you linked to correctly I need VCDS to do that.
Correct. Also VW diagnosis tool ODIS does the EGR part of it.

Thanks so much for all the info. Very interesting. Mine has flashed up the yellow EML once since but not for all of the times the P20EE and P2040100 faults have occurred. I cleared them both last time and they instantly came back but with no EML light. Then I ran the engine for a few weeks with "JLM Diesel Extreme Clean" additive in the tank and the faults went away. I've now gone back to running on just diesel again and the P2040100 fault appeared again yesterday. I'd guess my EGR cooler needs replacing. The EGR pipe was previously replaced on it but not the cooler.

Is it only a VW dealer can apply those software updates or could an indie mechanic acquire it and apply?
