On holiday in France - 12v stopped working.

Hi - first trip abroad in van I built last year with much help from this forum. All gone ok on uk trips. Just added solar panel pre France trip and connected thru ctek into fairly standard system. Have 95AH Agm battery, victron 65a battery connect. 130w solar panel. Been hooked up to mains when stopped here so far. After 2/3 days in one place 12v system goes offline - battery charger and solar still show as providing power and battery measures 12v plus (borrowed a basic voltmeter). Have checked all connections. Could the victron have faulted or is it just too hot!? Been 30+ degrees both times it’s gone off. Currently still off! Thx

Tell us more about what is connected to your leisure battery. What isn’t working ?

Pete

Fridge, lights and couple of USB ports and 12v sockets. Fridge is on the second to lowest setting. The fridge is obs working hard in this heat but not using much else.

Nothing works on the 12v system

Are you able to accurately measure the leisure battery voltage ?
If that is Ok (should be 13v plus on hookup), then could be that a fuse has blown in the 12v feed.

Pete

Just re-read your first message. So it’s gone off and come back on again. The leisure battery voltage is critical here.
When on mains hook up, what is charging the battery ?

Pete

Don’t have access to an accurate voltmeter unfortunately. Went off a few days ago then came back on after an hour or so. Today went off and stayed off now for a couple of hours. Leisure battery should be being charged by the mains charger which looks like it is. Solar also thru the ctek.

Post a few pics of your set-up.

Not the prettiest but worked so far. Just tried the old ‘switch off the isolator and switch on again’ and all working again. Voltage reading is only 11.9 but am still hooked up to mains so should be charging still thru there?40F51A74-D2D0-475D-BB61-404DBDF1E4DE.jpeg3FDFA098-1B20-4F2D-81E6-C03AC6CD58E0.jpeg

11.9v is too low whilst you are on hook-up.
It feels like your mains charger isn't working properly, so the battery voltage is dropping too low.
Can you get a photo of all of your mains charger ?

Pete

And how do you know it's 11.9v ? What is measuring that ?

Pete

That looks like it there @Pete C

8A job, on AGM profile.

If the fridge is drawing 6A and the battery is low...........and the lights and USB are on.

We're going to end up with a flat battery.

.

Also worth noting there is a Victron low volt battery protect....

That shuts the power off to save a low battery.....
Thats most likely what happened...

The Victron shut off the power .... Due to a slowly run down battery.

The off/on reset would have reset the Victron.

It looks like to me that he needs to swap out that old EHU 8A charger for a better model.

I'd suggest a 15A Victron IP22 or IP65....

.

And possiblity a new battery......

Or at very least get that one properly tested.

Agreed. I was hoping to see all the charger to see if there were any other lights, and exactly what model it is.

Yup - u got me there. Got all my set up from Rayne. Ditto the battery. Thx for the diagnostic - will try and nurse the van back up thru France and then do as you suggest.

Do you have a DC-DC charger to charge the leisure battery when driving ?
If so, you could just start the engine and see if that helps.

Pete

Got it all connected up thru the ctek. I have a simple voltmeter as part of the system. Also thinking now I need a smarter battery protect as the 65A is pretty basic - does the job obviously but would be good to have a better handle on my battery’s health - which is pretty new. Any suggestions welcome and will add to my list of upgrades when I get back.
