Oil is going up !

I've just had some good news today...they are honouring my price after all !!!

I'd just signed up to a local oil price counselling group too!! ;)

STATEMENT FROM GOFF PETROLEUM

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your patience over the past few days. We are very aware that the volatility in wholesale oil prices caused by the speed and scale of the unprecedented events currently unfolding in Iran and the Gulf, and the impact of our earlier communications has, understandably, caused frustration and concern. We’re genuinely sorry for this.

We work on a just in time delivery basis usually holding 1 to 2 days stock. Last week we experienced further stock shortages due to a refinery shut-down and our suppliers restricting volumes. This week we find ourselves in a better stock position.

As we value your custom enormously, we’ve chosen to take steps that support you even though they involve a significant cost to us, and we will be honouring your order, despite the wholesale price of fuel to us more than doubling. Maintaining your trust is extremely important to everyone at Goff.

Therefore, we’ve decided to take the steps outlined below in respect of all orders which were placed on the following dates:

  • Saturday 28 February.
  • Sunday, 1 March; and
  • Monday 2 March.

  • If you agreed to put your order on hold, delaying delivery until wholesale prices dropped.
If you placed an order and chose to keep it open pending a drop in wholesale prices, we’ll now honour your original order at the price you paid. Delivery will take place within the next 10 days.

If you have already paid we will do this automatically and there is no need for you to contact us or otherwise do anything else. If you have not yet paid please contact us to make payment so the order can be released.

  • If you agreed to pay a higher price for your order.
If you accepted revised pricing, we’ll refund any additional amount you have already paid above the original order price. This refund will be processed automatically as soon as possible and within 28 days, and we make the refund by the same method you used to pay. There is no need for you to contact us or otherwise do anything else.

  • If you cancelled your order.
If you cancelled your order please contact us so we can reinstate the order at the original price, and to make payment.

We understand that the past few days have been difficult, and we’re genuinely grateful for your patience. Our aim now is to restore your confidence and provide the dependable and trustworthy service you have come to expect from Goff.

I sense they feel customer backlash and/or statutory intervention cometh.

Running desperately low on heating oil, so have switched off the central heating and bought some more smokeless fuel for the stoves instead.

Got an electrician coming around to put a timer switch on the hot water tank immersion. I can put it on at 2330hrs and switch it off at 0530hrs for 7.5p kw. Not sure it will save money from the oil boiler doing it, but it's a feel good factor

Our heating is off completely now as it's warm enough not to be needed. The boiler is on for an hour in the morning for hot water, but even then we'll have a surplus as we only use it for showers. Everything else has a cold feed. I really don't understand how people get through so much oil.

Well, to give you some perspective, it's still bloody cold here and temps have barely risen above those in winter (today being a welcome exception). I'm guessing where you are spring has already sprung, but here the daffodils haven't even opened yet.

One thing we have noticed is that using the electric immersion the hot water temp is slightly lower than using the oil boiler. Not so much that it makes a difference. Have read its due to the immersion heating the top of the tank better, whereas the oil does it differently

Interestingly on the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff, if your EV is scheduled charging during the day, you get all the house leccy at the same rate. Mine is on charge now til 1200, so Mrs is currently got washer, dryer, dishwasher, hoover all going at the same time. She is a good wife ;)

Surely that’s down the thermostat set points?

Must be down to something.... From anyone I have spoken to it appears to be the complete opposite! Water is piping via the immersion.

The boiler is heating the water via a tube coil that typically runs through most of the tank volume and the thermostat maybe on the boiler circuit, if so it’s detecting the boiler circuit not the tank temperature.
The immersion heater is directly in contact with the water at the top of the tank over the length as the heater element.
You can get electric immersion heaters with combined dual elements of different length so you can choose how much of the tank (volume of water) you want to heat.
Short heater element for less hot water of long heater element for more hot water.
You can adjust the immersion tank thermostat by removing the cap on the top of immersion heater, obviously with the power off.

Guess lots of factors - poor insulation (UK is world famous for this), poor understanding of thermostat/programmer settings, poor zoning of heating.

Our house holds heat pretty well despite being built in the 30s. We have TRVs on most rads and these are the ‘smart’ type that shut off if they sense an open window and can easily be tweaked via the phone/tablet… something I do regularly to make sure we aren’t heating rooms we aren’t using.

Suggesting we ought to insulate our homes better gets a response like you just ate your neighbours dog. It’s bizarre.
