Hi, we're searching for a campervan and trying to get my head around whether the 5 speed manual is really that bad. I'd convinced myself we need a 6 speed but I just can t find any that fit our requirements, yet there's loads of 5 speeds about. It wont be used as our everyday, just for trips away, and neither of us are speed freaks, so quite happy pootling about.
Any thoughts welcome, thanks

We have a 102bhp 5 speed up-plated to a t30 and it handles full camper conversion no problem. Is it speedy? No. Does it drive and cruise on motorway ok? Yes. People will say you need more power and that a 6 speed will enable better driving characteristics etc which is largely true but does it need this? IMO no.

I’ve had my T6.1 T28 110ps LWB (am I missing an acronym?) with 5sp manual for nearly 2.5 years. Never had any major issues with power or the box. Plenty resource on here if anything but the rarest issue happens. First few weeks i kept reaching for 6th on the motorway, but that passed. For me with a camper, it’s more about what’s inside. The 6.1’s are decent to drive.

I looked at those as well, and then someone answered that same question 'it has the power you need, but not what you want'

Whether that matters or not i guess is up to you, but i do not regret at all getting a 150ps DSG. Personally, i know i would have regretted going for a 110ps manual.

Oh, you don't want to be taking any notice of that fool 🤣...
Regarding power output, I always say: 102 has adequate power; 150 has all the power you need; 199/204 has all the power you'd want...
