T6.1 vs T6 let battle commence

Not a problem for me at legal velocities, although 18s helpfully raises the gearing noticeably.
Not sure if mines any different being a t5.1?
Most days it’s not an issue but after a drive to Scotland or Cornwall from the midlands I do notice my ears have suffered.
Guess the wind noise of the pop top deflector and the various rattles from the camper conversion also add to the issue.

I guess I will find out but it will be as the 140bhp. Having driven the 6 speed 150bhp I couldnt get a 102 or a 110bhp. No offence intended :)

Thanks all for the kind comments following my doofus 1st post.

Well today I tried a 2021 Transit Custom Limited. Why, well I was thinking I could save as much of my pension as possible. And under the impression it would be better or as good as the Transporter. So what did I think ?

Vanny very vanny. And that is because not surprisingly it is a van. The 130bhp engine is enough, better than the 110bhp in the Transporter. But absolutely does not have the sheer grunt of the 150bhp Transporter. And you feel very high up, much higher than in a Transporter. So nothing overly negative, and a still a good van but damn it the Transporter feels & drives better. Im going to have to suck it up and pay.

What compromises did you guys make to get your van ?

A T6 with grunt? A lifetime of fast bikes has left me needing recalibrating because they all feel dog slow to me, hence choosing the 110 wasn't a compromise. Hell, I've not owned a car with as little as 150 ponies in more than 30 years.

No real compromises on my final purchase.

Like you I dropped a big chunk of my pension on mine so was careful to get as close as to my ideal as possible, and I ended up agonising over two vans: a Highline and Business Pack, both otherwise similar but the latter with a better spec camper.

Im not planning to ever sell it but never say never, so didnt even consider the Transit as they devalue faster than a politician pockets a freebie and I wanted the best return if I ever did need to punt it on. Indeed, the 2024 Transporter (not the T7 Multivan) is proving so unpopular with leisure buyers that decent converted 6.1's have risen in value this year and I could probably shift mjne for what I paid for it. Zero chance of being able to that in a Transhit, Renfault, or Vibrat-O.

A year on as I trundle up the road at 65 whistling along to Perry Como I've not a single regret. It its a camper, not a sports car, and as somewhere to spend days or nights it's exactly what I wanted.

Like you my friend I also had fast bikes, so I know where you are coming from. But the 150bhp felt quite punchy, I was easily passing car based traffic. But then perhaps I wasnt supposed to being N1. But then I want it to be a full on camper, I want a daily with some stealthy camping possibilities.

Your comments on resale and value are spot on. Your comment on the 110 are even more interesting. Given the 150bhp are more sought after and as such attract even higher prices. I just dont want to regret not making the right choice.

My 204 felt quite poky which makes my new 150 feel a bit laggy at times, don’t think the weird choices the dsg box makes help with that

If you say so, but then its what suits you not and old fart like me.

So what did you get? Don't leave us hangin'!
Not exactly a youth myself :) . But the standard 150bhp I drove was easily maintaining some uber illegal speeds up a very long dual carriageway that climbs significantly. And it had more to give. A stretch of road I know well and enjoy hoofing along in my Mini Cooper S. To be fair the 110bhp held a speed of more than it was supposed to also, but just didnt feel as relaxed. Just a personal opinion by the way.

Not bought anything yet unfortunately, but I know it has to be a Transporter now.

Ah, well I dont venture above the legal limit. I had years of doing that at work and its well out my system.

These days im a 65MPH man, traffic flow and conditions permitting, on the motorway and you know what? It makes zero difference to the journey time for any of my regular long haul trips, so why waste the fuel and add wear and tear to the van and my remaining hair follicles by trying to go any quicker for no result?

You got any more lined up to look at?

Same here. A steady cruise and you still catch up with the lane weaving Senna wannabes at the next bit of traffic. Guaranteed. Makes me smile.
I assume they were the kids that when a teacher had you all sat on the floor for story time then started asking questions about the book - these goons would be bouncing up and down like they’d just wet themselves shouting “me sir, pick me!”.
I also notice what they make up for in acceleration they lose in their (lack of) forward planning.

Actually I was saying the same thing to swmbo today on our way to Whitchurch. I have definitely got slower from my Golf GTi days. But I do still enjoy 'making progress' as they say in the AIM. Regarding the van im just concerned about having enough torque to pull us up some of the big hills in Cornwall with our ebikes on the back.

You are very right, the times I have rolled my eyes at drivers like that. And when I have done it myself.

Im a retired dibble Class 1 driver, long since discovered that at legal speeds the only thing that affects progress is traffic conditions.

Hills of of North Wales, some of which I wouldn't fancy trying to walk up, didnt present an issue for my 110 with the weight of a full conversion aboard. They'll all do it.

I got my van during COVID. I wanted a van and made a compromise.... Needless to say I've swithered about changing and spent too long on this Forum and too much money but hey ho I'm still with my 'van'. I like the van community and have learned so much on here.

Transit Custom Def feels bigger, wider and longer and wing mirrors etc far more van like. I parked mine next to my bros T6 and he could Def see difference.

You can get a phantom remap done in them but I've never felt the need to, same engine apparently just mapped diff. My next van will Def be a PHEV.... Short runs not good for vans, albeit I can brim mine with adblue..and have all the nice things without having to have sold a kidney.

Another little nugget of good info there thanks. Im currently teetering on the edge of spending a significant chunk of wedge (around 20k) for a T6.1, 150bhp with 100k. Its a highline with tailgate and lovely condition. But now im thinking just calm down there are thousands of them. I could buy a higher mileage van which im not scared of. Or a slightly older van, and would save me potentially thousands. But then I think yes but prices im told are going to climb for the T6.1 because people are not buying the new van. I hesitate to reference T7.

Currently driving swmbo nuts with indecision.

They are a good van no doubt, I think I just prefer the more car like feel (to me) of the Transporter.
