Loc8 table rattle driving me mad

Hi all

Just had the Loc8 table replaced due to it rattling (brand new conversion).

Company that did the conversion had no issues on replacing it, however, absolutely no difference, it still rattled and ‘taps’ away as I drive.

is this something that we have to live with or have we been unlucky and had a faulty one replaced with another faulty one?

The rest of the conversion is faultless and has no rattles or squeaks at all - but this pre made table/pod just brings in an annoying constant noise.

Thanks

I think it’s just something they do. Seems to be worse sometimes in ours. It could be the table rattling in the holder or the legs rattling on the table. I did put some felt tape on the legs which seems to fix the problem but I think now the table rattling in the holder is worse. Put some towel in temporarily to see if it helps and I think it doesIMG_6712.webp
I know some people have carpet lined the holder, for aesthetics mostly but that should help the rattling although too much and the table won’t fit or it will rub on the rear arch.

When we had our T6 converted, the conversion company told us during the planning phase that the loc8 table rattles and suggested we had our door panel (that the table stows in) carpeted.

There are no rattles from ours at all so maybe carpeting the panel is the solution? Either that or use some self adhesive foam pads to fill the slack?

just partially or full carpet it.. . . job done.

not noticed ours rattle . . . over the din of everything else inside the van that does rattle.

It’s the worst rattle that matters…
…until it’s fixed, then it’s the new worst rattle

That’s a good idea. Are you willing to share a few of them? Surely you don’t need all 40? 😜
Haha you say that but the kids love funding them and the dog loves to chew on them once the terrorists drop them.

Mine is worst one way up.

Fortunately we have a big scratch on one side, so that we know which way up it needs to go

Just FYI, the photo above is not by the looks of it a Loc8 Table System table. The original Loc8 table tops all have a puntinella style laminate (Puntinella or Maryland Fonce) and this one looks like it's a sort of brushed aluminium finish. This could mean that the original Loc8 table legs and trim panel have been used and a different top has then been used, perhaps to match other cupboards. If the legs have not been exactly located using a jig, then they can be slightly misaligned and could cause a potential rattle.

I need to disclose here that it's my company that makes the Loc8 Table System, so I know them really well. I'm also acutely aware that there is no advertising or product 'pushing' on this forum and rightly so. I hope I'm not breaking any rules with the following post and if I am, I apologise and assume it will be taken down. But as I know them well and possibly even screwed on the table legs myself, I feel my input may be helpful. So here goes.....
I have coped below a detailed email response to someone who had an issue with rattles back in May 2024.
I hope it helps.

Hi Lisa,
Rattles......
Without actually seeing the van, it's really hard to work out a cure, as campers have often been previously modified and this can alter something in an unforeseen way.

This said, there is one cause of rattles that is relatively common; please check that all 4 of the adjustable feet are screwed in fully. If they are slightly unscrewed they can rattle in a really irritating way. We have discussed doing away with the screw-in feet, but people see them as being a good feature, even though in reality they are not really used.

If the feet are fine, then daft as it sounds, please try putting the table into the trim the other way up. The shock chords have slightly different tension between the top section and the bottom and sometimes a leg just needs a little more or less tension against it to solve the issue.

After trying that, my final thoughts are written below listing every other cause of rattles/solutions we have so far come across in the hope that they will help.

1 Doors that have previously had plywood panels screwed to them (as most second hand vans have). If the area around the (now removed) self-tapping screws has been pulled slightly out of shape where the loc8 panel rests, this can cause the panel to be slightly deformed and it then vibrates against the door skin or causes the table legs to rattle against the panel/table. Sometimes this cause of a rattle/vibration will be more or less apparent with the table removed from the trim.

2 A cable rattling against the trim panel from behind (there is a black control cable running directly behind the area near the black door handle and this can be disturbed when fitting, or perhaps move over time). When I fit a Loc8 System I insulate the door at the same time using earth wool and in the upper section I make sure the plastic cable sits in the middle of the insulation surrounded by material, rather than just resting against the trim panel. This rattle tends to be the same whether the table is fitted into the trim or not.

3 Clips that have previously been stretched if the old panel that has been removed was carpeted or sometimes when ply lined, the extra thickness can have stretched the clips. This can make the Loc8 panel (which is original thickness) a loose fit and cause a vibration. The same problem can be caused by non genuine VW clips being used, as is sometimes the case where panels have been carpeted. The solution here is to replace the clips with unstretched original VW ones.

4 Insulation behind the panel pushing it out of shape, causing the legs to rattle against the plastic, or the panel to rattle against the door.

5 The table top changing shape slightly in extreme heat/cold or humidity or dryness (the table top is made of wood so it can alter shape slightly due to atmospheric conditions). Although this tends to create a rattle only sometimes in specific environmental conditions.

We spent ages trying to design a system that was rattle free, yet it sometimes happens that a table rattles in one van but not in another, with no obvious reason. However we have always managed to solve every rattle we have been presented with and if you are ever nearby us, we will gladly take a look at yours to ensure you leave us rattle free.

No, it has a puntinella style finish, I thinks it’s just a bad photo that makes it look like a more brushed aluminium. It was installed in 2019/2020 by 8ball campers as an original item. Our colour coded fitted table is bright orange 😁

I think it’s Colin from 8ball in some of the old publicity shots, could be wrong though.

Great product btw though, 100% recommend it to anyone, we’ve never once taken our orange fitted table away with us in all this time. If you could make one that folds out to be twice as big when used outside that would be perfection!

Apologies, my eyesight must be going...... old age is really annoying.
If it's an 8 Ball van, then you have passed very close to us, as we are only 3 or 4 miles away. If you are ever passing this way again I'll gladly sort it for you. I pathologically hate rattles and squeaks. If you just let me know a day or two in advance, I'll do my best. Cheers Neil

Useful information from @Neil Wrightson, thanks!

FWIW Our Loc8 table has always rattled - it was fitted by a (hopefully!) professional converter into a new van in 2022. It seems to be the table legs rattling and I’ve just put some small pieces of pipe insulation between the legs and that’s stopped it.

Great table though!

Couple of things, we have a Loc8 table, fitted to the van when it was converted 9 years ago and still going strong. We had the door card carpet lined, a tight fit for the table to start with and needed a bit of persuasion to get it in & out, but now the carpet has bedded in, no problem and never a rattle.
The brass pins in the leg catches can get a bit “gratey” but a dab of silicone grease sorts that for a while.
@Neil Wrightson Re pushing your goods, AFAIK, you can take out trade membership and push your wares to your heart’s content.

Very kind, tbh it’s not a big issue most of the time, sometimes it does really rattle but moving it around a bit normally helps this. If it does come back I will run through the advice above, thanks

Ours has always rattled, but not consistently after every use. I believe there is some play and depending on how we return it, we either have the rattle or we don't. I like the simple idea of wedging an object, as we have often thought about doing just that, but by the time we've stopped, the thought has gone...🤦
