Insurance on non registered van

Hi all - as most of us know, the dvla won’t change vehicle status from panel van to camper / motorhome. So specialist insurers won’t insure (Carole Nash). So do most people just have ordinary van insurance with non business use? I’m with a plan but my policy does state it’s a conversion….

Hi I found this while I was trying to eat humble pie for a Comment I made earlier, basically it's saying DVLA will register a change if it states Panel Van, Box van etc on the v5 log book.
I've took a snap shot of the section from the Gov.co.uk site.
Maybe people should write to their MP and make a noise if things that should be done by DVLA are not being done.
After all there's a lot of VDub owners out there.

Unfortunately, they moved the goal post a bit by specifying the features needed to satisfy the requirements to change the body type to Motor Caravan, there will be a link next to point 2 in your web page above..

Motor caravan external permanent features

This list describes the external features which are commonly seen in motor caravans, and it is intended to provide guidance on what DVLA expects to see when considering your application:

  • 2 or more windows on at least one side of the main body (this does not include windows on the driver or passenger doors) to provide a reasonable amount of daylight into the living accommodation
  • a separate door which provides access to the living accommodation of the vehicle (this excludes the driver and passenger doors); a window on this door counts as a separate window on the main body
  • motor caravan-style graphics on both sides of the vehicle
  • an awning bar attached to either side of the vehicle
  • a high-top roof (this does not include a pop-top elevating roof) THIS IS THE PART THAT SCUPPERS MOST CONVERSIONS

DVLA will need photographic evidence of the completed conversion.

Though how VW and other Pop Top type manufacturers get around this part I have no idea.

I had a converter offer to plonk a high-top roof on top of the van during conversion and then take some pics for me to send to DVLA. I didn't think it would fool anyone and declined the offer (and their conversion services). Would be interesting to know what the penalty would be if subsequently found to have fraudulently obtained a reclassification, especially as there's zero advantage to having a 'Motor Caravan' classification.
