Insulating a pop-top

Hi gang! We've recently bought a bare VW Transporter T6.1 - 2024 for conversion. Delivery of the finished article is scheduled for mid December and we're planning our first trip in early January in mid Wales. Anticipating it's going to be quite chilly then, we're thinking of an internal insulating material either already manufactured or do our own. Does anyone have experience of fitting/building this? Any advide would be gladly received. Thank you!

There are a few threads out there covering poptop insulation. Put the kettle on and have a play with the search function and all will be revealed.

Pucer do a range, but will custom design if they don't do your poptop. Not pretty, but functional. We have used ours in all seasons for 4 years.

Most of the common roofs will have someone supplying a roof cover.

It is well worth it, it transforms the feel of the van in cold, wet or windy weather.

I’ve been using Rainbow Screens all year round and can’t recommend them enough. They make a huge difference — especially in the cooler months, cutting down condensation noticeably and keeping the inside warmer can really feel the difference when they are not on. In summer, I just flip it so the silver reflective side faces out, which really helps keep the van cooler when abroad.

Added bonus: they also black out the pop-top, so it’s great for sleeping in brighter mornings.

If you’re thinking about getting one for the new year, I’d suggest ordering soon to have it in time for January. Sometimes a few pop up on eBay as well.

You can make one of these for very little. I made one from foil insulation and gorilla tape I already had, and paid only a few quid for the velcro. It works most exdellently.
