How to use a DSG

Hi all , new to the DSG gearbox so I have a couple of questions, can I when stationary put the handbrake on and either keep it in drive or put it into neutral? Will this damage the box? I have stop/start but like to disengage it as sometimes it cuts out the engine when going from drive to reverse gear when I’m maneuvering onto my drive or turning around. Thanks

Forgot to say the reason I ask is that I have a dodgy right knee and keeping it on the brake when stationary gives me a bit of jipp !!

I'd recommend getting used to holding it on the brakes with your left foot, if you're used to a clutch it'll probably come as second nature. I find doing things this way helps when manoeuvring too.

You should be in P or N if planning to apply the hand break for any length of time.

D is not a good idea as it will be trying to pull away on you and wear the clutch pack.

but with either P or N you need to re-apply the brake to re-select Drive anyway,

also remember the T6 has Hill hold/start assist, where it holds the brakes on for a few seconds after letting go of the brakes with your foot, ( will release as you move forwards if under the few seconds timer)

If you do use the handbrake in D the van will try to pull away for a second or two before releasing the clutch again so probably a valid way of doing things.

Thanks all, I will stick it in N and apply the handbrake and then re-apply brake select D and release handbrake ? Or should I, apply brake, release handbrake then select D? Should have stuck to a manual

I think you’re overthinking this!! The only thing you probably shouldn’t do is leave it in drive with the handbrake on for too long. Apart from that do whatever suits you.

Unfortunately I always do over think things… I did today start leaving it in D while stuck in traffic but from tomorrow after the advice given I will definitely not.. Thanks again all

Hi - I'm fairly new to dsg, but after basic research I was led to believe that at traffic lights etc when waiting for a couple of minutes, holding on the foot brake with the box in drive was the approved procedure - is this not the case please?
Thanks

No problem at all. Foot on the brake disengages the clutch. The equivalent of pressing the clutch pedal on a manual.
